Nalbandian Stages Comeback for ATP Buenos Aires Title

Posted on February 24, 2008

David Nalbandian came back from a set down to defeat Jose Acasuso 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-4 in the all-Argentine final at the Copa Telmex ATP stop in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

"I'm very happy to win at home," said Nalbandian, who moves back into the Top 10 after the win. "It's beautiful to pull off something I could never do here before."

Diego Maradona, former Argentine soccer captain, was in attendance for the all-Argentine celebration.

"I'm mad because I lost," Acasuso said. "No one likes to lose on any given day. But I'm satisfied with the way I played and for the fact I was really close to winning the title here. I had chances in the tiebreak in the second set and when he was serving at 1-2, 15-40 in the third. The match was decided by one or two close points."

Acasuso saved two break points in the second set tiebreak, and in the third Acasuso double-faulted to give Nalbandian the critical break at 4-3.

"I played some breaks badly and made mistakes," Nalbandian said. "But luckily I won the second set, and that was the key."
