Unseeded Belgian Darcis Ousts Soderling for ATP Memphis Crown

Posted on March 2, 2008

Unheralded 23-year-old Belgian Steve Darcis won the Region Morgan Keegan Championships title Sunday in Memphis, upsetting No. 8 seed Robin Soderling of Sweden 6-3, 7-6(5) for his second career title.

Last year Darcis won his first title on clay at Amersfoort as a qualifier.

Soderling, who upset Andy Roddick en route to the final, was playing in only his third tournament of the season since missing the final three months of last year with a left wrist injury.

"I don't realize what I did today," Darcis said. "Maybe if you ask me the same question tomorrow, I might answer better. It's just amazing the way I feel right now. Really tough for me to explain."

In the doubles final, top seeds Mahesh Bhupathi and Mark Knowles won their first ATP title as team, defeating Thai twins Sanchai and Sonchat Ratiwatana 7-6(5), 6-2.
