Simon Winless as France Upset by Czechs in Davis CupPosted on March 8, 2009 French Top 10er Gilles Simon went 0-2 in singles for the weekend as the French were upset by the Czech Republic in Davis Cup play this weekend.
Tied 1-1 heading into Saturday, Czechs Radek Stepanek and Tomas Berdych defeated Richard Gasquet and Michael Llodra in four sets, then Stepanek defeated Simon 7-6(2), 6-3, 7-6(0) to clinch the tie for the Czechs. "You should never forget a weekend like the one I just had," said Simon, struggling unsuccessfully to hold back tears after the loss. "You need to ask yourself the right questions, in order to be ready when facing a similar situation in the future." Stepanek broke out "The Worm" dance after the win, then joined his team for the celebration. "It's an amazing feeling to steal three points from the French," Stepanek said. "They have such a talented team with guys who have been winning so many matches this season. But Tomas and I are feeling great. We are feeling fit and we are very excited to play another tough tie against Argentina in the quarterfinals." The Czechs will host the Argentines, likely on indoor carpet in Ostrava. |
