Croats Want Roddick, U.S. on Clay in Davis Cup Posted on March 8, 2009
The Croats have a winning record against the U.S. in Davis Cup, and after both teams advanced over the weekend, the Croats say bring on Andy Roddick and the Americans.
"We won both matches against USA, and we hope to do that again," said Mario Ancic, who helped the Croats roll past Chile 5-0.
The U.S. defeated Switzerland, and will travel to Croatia in July
"If I had to chose the surface to play against Andy Roddick, it would certainly be clay," said Croat Marin Cilic.
While the Croats are not known for their claycourt prowess, the U.S. is known as having clay as its crutch. The Croats will possibly put the tie with the U.S. on indoor clay, possibly in a new arena in Split.
Croatia is 2-0 against the U.S. in Davis Cup play, with Ivan Ljubicic and Ancic handing the Bryan brothers one of their two losses.
Against the Croats, Chile was without Fernando Gonzalez, who pulled from the tie with a back injury.
Ljubicic claimed to retire from Davis Cup competition in 2007. Croatia won the Davis Cup in 2005.
"We have a very good team, and high ambitions," Ancic said.
