Vaidisova Wins, Dokic Stalls, No Williams Sisters at Indian Wells

Posted on March 12, 2009

Vaidisova had lost 11 of her last 13 matches before regaining her winning form on Wednesday at Indian Wells with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Dutch wildcard Michaella Krajicek.

Comeback queen Jelena Dokic was not so fortunate, as the Aussie wildcard was shuttled out in the first round 6-4, 6-4 by American journeywoman Jill Craybas. Another American, wildcard Alexa Glatch, moved into the second round with a straight-set win over Canadian qualifier Stephanie Dubois.

Other winners of note on the day were China's Li Na, and Israel's Shahar Peer in early-round play.

Russian Dinara Safina is the top seed for the event, with the Williams sisters, Venus and Serena, sitting out Indian Wells over what they saw as a racist incident in 2001.
