Cahill Turns Down Federer, Joins adidas Coaching Staff Posted on March 13, 2009
Darren Cahill, after passing on the opportunity to coach Roger Federer, has been announced as part of adidas' coaching team, joining Las Vegas training partner Gil Reyes.
The 43-year-old Cahill will work as a member of the adidas Player Development Program with Reyes and long-time adidas coach Sven Groeneveld. Cahill has coached former No. 1s Lleyton Hewitt and Andre Agassi, but reportedly turned down Federer, who has a training base in Dubai, due to the travel demands.
"With Roger being European and all those away weeks and the kids entrenched in school here in Las Vegas -- the reality really hit in Dubai," Cahill told Christopher Clarey of The New York Times. "It was 100 percent that. We couldn't get past that practical hurdle. Roger is an absolutely class act. I told him on Sunday, and it was a difficult decision, but I just couldn't do it. It's getting tougher and tougher for me pack the bags and leave the kids at this stage."
