Berdych Miracle Tiebreak Comeback Wins ATP Munich TitlePosted on May 10, 2009 No. 4 seed Tomas Berdych won his fifth career title on Sunday, and a brand new BMW, with a 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(5) win over Russian Mikhail Youzhny in the final of the BWM Open by FWU AG in Munich.
"This is almost like a dream to be here doing the sport you love, then to win the tournament and get a prize like this," Berdych said regarding the white BMW Roadster. "It's absolutely amazing." Youzhny led the career series 5-3 entering the final, but it was the Czech who improved to 5-4 in career finals. It was a heartbreaker for the Russian, who led 5-1 in the third-set tiebreak. "It was really emotional moments, especially the last game when I had a couple of match points already, and then I went to the tiebreak I was so down 5-1 and it did not look good for me," Berdych said. "But I was just trying to fight. That's tennis, to stay until the last point because you never know what's going to happen." Youzhny fell to 4-5 in career finals. "It was a tough match for both players. Tomas played really well on a high level all match long. I was behind for most of the match, which was not easy," the Russian said. Youzhny finished runner-up in Munich for the second time in three years. "It has been a tough year for me trying to find my game and it looks like I'm on the right track now," Youzhny said. |
