Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark 7-5, 6-4 on Saturday to win her second career WTA Tour singles title at the Collector Swedish Open Women in
Bastad.
During the week the unseeded Martinez Sanchez upset No. 4 seed
Kaia Kanepi and No. 7 seed
Carla Suarez Navarro before toppling the top-seeded Wozniacki.
Martinez Sanchez won her first singles title earlier this season at
Bogota, also on red clay.
"You played better, congratulations, but I was hoping for a present for my birthday," said the 19-year-old Wozniacki, ranked No. 9 entering the event.
Martinez Sanchez said, "Unfortunately I couldn't give you a birthday present but I'll invite you out for a nice dinner tonight."
The Scandinavian crowd sung Happy Birthday to the Danish star, who drops to 2-4 in finals ths year, after the match.
