Serena Williams, Nadal on Deck: Tennis-X Predictions
by Jeremy Davis | June 1st, 2010, 11:17 pm

A look at Wednesday’s match-ups at Roland Garros:

(1) Serena Williams vs. (7) Samantha Stosur
Serena put a straight-set beatdown on Stosur at the Australian Open in January, expect more of the same here as now the Aussie has expectations. Serena in straights.
(19) Nicolas Almagro vs. (2) Rafael Nadal

Nadal is 6-0 against Almagro, because Almagro can’t close the big matches. Rafa in four.

(4) Jelena Jankovic vs. Yaroslava Shvedova
Shvedova beat Jankovic at last year’s US Open…so…she already had her shot. This is the big stage. Jankovic in three.

(22) Jurgen Melzer vs. (3) Novak Djokovic

Look for the sporadic Melzer to show up against Djokovic’s steady baseline attack. Novak in three.

Kimmi Says:

serena to put a beatdown on stosur..I don’t think it will be a beat down..stosur is playing well on clay

jane Says:

I agree with Kimmi. After seeing Stosur vs. Henin, I think Serena might be pushed more than she was at the AO versus Sam. Sam’d have to play really well to beat Serena though, serve well and keep the UEs low.

BT Says:

Stosur has beaten Serena once and had match points against her another time. Granted neither of those were at a Grand Slam though… there is a different Serena playing grand slams than there is on the regular tour. As noted above by Kimmi and Jane Stosur is strong on clay. I think it could be a three setter but may still fall Serena’s way. Either way hope it is a high quality match.

Thangs Says:

Stosur, please make it. I like dementieva to win…..anyone but serena

Dory Says:

I notice this site has added shitty popup ads. This is my last visit to this site.

Tyron Says:

While i am a Serena Williams fan, I also have a great respect for Sam Stosur and have been really impressed by her prowess. Despite Thangs comment that anyone but Serena would be preferable, whether you like it or not, you have to commend for the fact that she is playing extremely well on her least favorite surface. As much as i (and most) were anticipating a Serena-Justine match, this matchup is more fitting. Many commentators already had the tournament sewn up to hand it to Justine, which was a slap in the face to the other women who are playing good clay-court tennis. Its been a great tournament, and may the best woman win.

Kimo Says:

Dementieva vs. Schiavone, Jankovic vs. Stosur. That’s my semi-final lineup. All of them veterans. All of them yet to win a slam.

Milemarker17 Says:

Yo, Dorie! This may not reach you following your online snit here, but, geez, don’t you understand that nothing, including websites are for free? Advertising, in large part, is what brings you the web including tennis sites. Don’t like pop-ups? Neither do a lot of other people. That’s why there are such things as pop-up blockers. Look into it and try getting over your sense of entitlement.

BT Says:

Woo Hoo! Stosur has beaten Serena!!!!!!

8-6 in the fifth. This is unbelievable. I’m so excited! Congratulations Sam.

BT Says:

8-6 in the third even! LOL.

Full score 6-2 6-7 8-6

Gregoire Gentil Says:

Amazing Stosur!!! As said yesterday, 2010 winner will be a first timer…

PJ Says:

I’m thrilled there will be a first-time winner guaranteed, and it’s only the semis. Can’t remember the last time this happened. I really don’t know who I’d like to see win. Stosur has taken out two big guns, but I’d also love to see Jankovic or Dementieva win.

margot Says:

Well done Stosur. Go all the way now girl!

jane Says:

PJ – well said! I agree with the sentiments expressed in your post. I too am happy to know that we will have a new FO champion on the women’s side this Sunday, come what may. And what a remarkable win from Stosur, who showed such resolve to beat an always feisty Serena Williams 8-6 in the final set. Good for her!

zola Says:

Wow! great effort from Stosur. She lost it a bit during the second set, but way to come back in the third. That inside out forehand of hers is just a beauty to watch.
She has been doing really well this year. Let’s see how well she can do in the semis.

Sorry about Djoko’s loss. He was two sets ahead. I did not see the first 4 sets and don’t know what happened. He was breathing heavily in the 5th though.

I thought the call against him was unfair. It made a 0-30 to a 15-15 at a very critical point. They totally need to put the Hawk-eye on clay.

jane Says:

zola, thanks. Hope you stay around here. You were missed! Ah well, as he said in his presser, he shouldn’t’ve let it get that far, but on the other hand, Melzer played some great tennis to beat Novak in a tight 5 set contest. It happens. Maybe he’ll do better next time. Hope so.

Best wishes to your Rafa; he’s looking to be in championship form.

zola Says:

Thanks a lot for the nice words. I have been really busy in the past few months. I enjoy the discussions here and will try to be here as much as I can.

we have to wait and see how Rafa will do. Mezler probably will go to that SF match with lots of confidence and if he can win that, either Soderling or Berdych ( I think it will be Soderling) will not be easy opponents. Sunday will be a wet day, which will suit power-hitters more. Will be nice if Rafa can pull it off.
