World No. 1 Serena Williams returned to her ruthless ways on Sunday, taking apart young German Annika Beck 6-3, 6-0 to set up a round of 16 meeting with two-time Grand Slam champion Svetlana Kuznetsova at Wimbledon.
“I’m looking forward to it,” Williams said of meeting the former world No. 2-ranked Russian. “We both are ready for this match. You know, we’re both going to give it our heart, as we always do when we play each other. I know what it takes to win these tournaments. It’s just about now just doing it.”

Kuznetsova on Sunday posted a hard-fought 6-7(1), 6-2, 8-6 win over American Sloane Stephens which wasn’t without controversy. The Russian received a code violation for illegal coaching coming from her players’ box.

“I bet you all my prize money he didn’t say anything,” Kuznetsova yelled at the chair umpire regarding her coach after the penalty was assessed. “You’re not doing well.”

It was a day for upsets at the All England Club as unseeded Russian Ekaterina Makarova toppled No. 24 Barbora Strycova 6-4, 6-2, No. 21 Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova upended No. 11 Timea Bacsinszky 6-3, 6-2, and No. 27 CoCo Vandeweghe put on a power display to dismiss No. 6-seeded Roberta Vinci 6-3, 6-4.

“Coco is a great player, especially on this surface,” Vinci said. “She is so strong on the serve. She was hitting 114, 115 [miles an hour]. Also her second serve had a good kick. I had difficulties returning. She is one of the new generation of power hitters who are fearless. They don’t even have to think about what they are doing, which makes them even more dangerous.”

Next up for Vandeweghe is the Russian Pavlyuchenkova.

Matches to look for on Monday at the All-England Club are (1) Serena Williams vs. (13) Svetlana Kuznetsova, (5) Simona Halep vs. (9) Madison Keys, and (21) Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova vs. (27) Coco Vandeweghe.

Cibby absolutely out playing Aga ATM ….

BBB Says:

Does anyone have better hand/eye coordination than Aga?

BBB Says:

Keys injured again. It’s increasingly hard to see her as a viable #1 when this is the prevailing pattern.

Van Persie Says:

Yay! Simona went through! So glad :)

BBB Says:

McEnroe (P) blaming Keys’ injuries on lack of fitness. I wonder if that’s fair.

Serena looked terrifying in that second set against Kuzy. Haven’t seen her play like that in a long, long time.

jane Says:

great win for cibulkova
also venus, at 36, carrying on.

Willow Says:

Cibby is one of those players that makes me smile whenever she wins, love Aga too, amazing match, Cibby played out of her mind, best match so far on the womens side IMO ….
