Serena Williams Withdraws From Cincinnati, Angelique Kerber Will Be No. 1 By Winning Title
Serena Williams took a wildcard last week into Cincinnati, but today the World No. 1 had to return because after a practice on site, her shoulder wasn’t good enough to defend her title.
“I’m very disappointed I’m not able to compete in the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati as I was really looking forward to defending my title,” the 2-time defending champion said. “My shoulder inflammation continues to be a challenge, but I am anxious to return to the court as soon as possible.”
Serena will hope to be ready for the US Open which begins two weeks from today.
With Serena out, No. 2 Angelique Kerber can overtake Serena for the No. 1 ranking by winning the title. Williams has been ranked No. 1 for 183 consecutive weeks and 306 overall.
