In Fight For No. 1, Serena Williams Will Test Shoulder And Play Cincinnati
After an early, surprising exit in Rio from both the singles and the doubles, Serena Williams will return to Cincinnati to defend her 2015 title.
“We are thrilled Serena is returning to defend her titles,” said tournament director Andre Silva. “She is a fan favorite wherever she goes, especially here in Cincinnati as the reigning champion.”
Williams will enter this year’s tournament on a 10-match winning streak in Cincinnati, having dropped just two sets in winning consecutive titles. In 2015, Williams defeated Simona Halep in the final after downing Ana Ivanovic in the 2014 title match.
During the Rio Olympics, Serena had trouble with her shoulder with some questioning if she would even play the US Open.
With the emergence this year of Angelique Kerber and just two titles on the season for Serena, the German has a chance to grab the No. 1 ranking next week!
Kerber would have to win Cincinnati with Serena losing before the quarterfinals. The women’s draw is released later today.
