Notes: The No. 2-seeded Beck starts against the upset specialist Mattek-Sands…Wildcards were awarded to Canucks Francoise Abanda, Aleksandra Wozniak and Carol Zhao…The last three seeds are ranked outside the WTA Top 90…Withdrawing from the event were Timea Babos, Anna-Lena Friedsam, Monica Niculescu, former Slam champ Francesca Schiavone and Anna Tatishvili…Beck, the lone former champ in the field, last year beat Jelena Ostapenko in the final…The tournament has fallen on hard times and lacked star power since 2007 when Lindsay Davenport raised the trophy, despite the WTA touting “the tournament has since become one of the most prestigious events in Quebec and even all of Canada.”…Other former champs include Jennifer Capriati (1993) and Maria Sharapova (2003).

Notes: Tough start for (4) Larsson against Lisicki…No Top 30 players in the field…Wildcards were awarded to Japan’s Misa Eguchi, Eri Hozumi and Risa Ozaki…Withdrawing from the field were Irina Falconi, Kirsten Flipkens, Nicole Gibbs, Hsieh Su-wei, Kristina Kucova, Jelena Ostapenko, Anastasija Sevastova and Wang Qiang…Wickmayer is the lone former champ in the field, in last year’s final beating Magda Linette.
