Four events into the 2017 season and world No. 1 No. 2 Angelique Kerber has just four match wins! Today, the German suffered her second opening round loss of the season falling to Daria Kasatkina 6-4, 0-6, 6-4 in the second round at Doha.

“It’s always tough to play the first matches after a longer break like I have,” Kerber said. “But I was not feeling the best today. I’m trying to find my rhythm.

“But she plays good. I make too many mistakes in the important moments. I think it was, for sure, not my day. I was not feeling the best today.

Former No. 1 Carolina Wozniacki advanced over Agnieszka Radwanska 7-5, 6-3.

Before the rains hit, Karolina Pliskova defeated Caroline Garcia and American qualifier Lauren Davis beat former Wimbledon semifinalist Elena Vesnina to reach the quarterfinals.

And advancing but into the semifinals was Dominika Cibulkova who picked up her 400th career match win with a victory over Sam Stosur 7-5, 6-4.

“She was really fighting and really into the match,” Stosur said. “It came down to a few points here and there; you can see from the scoreline that it was very tight.

“The conditions are tough here, but I’m happy to have gotten lucky this week so far.”

If rain clears, the quarterfinals and the semifinals will be played Friday.
