The Citi Open hosts both the men and women in Washington, D.C., next week where four Top 10ers headline the men’s field, and Simona Halep is the women’s headliner against a dangerous field.
ADHEREL
CITI OPEN
WASHINGTON, D.C.; surface: hard

Men’s Seeds: Dominic Thiem, Kei Nishikori, Milos Raonic, Grigor Dimitrov, Alexander Zverev, Gael Monfils, Lucas Pouille, Jack Sock, John Isner, Nick Kyrgios, Gilles Muller, Mischa Zverev, Juan Martin del Potro, Steve Johnson, Kevin Anderson, Ryan Harrison

Floaters: Vasek Pospisil, Dudi Sela, Daniil Medvedev, Reilly Opelka, Kyle Edmund

Notes: Four Top 10ers in the field, along with the former US Open winner and three-time Washington champion Del Potro…The Citi Open is again left out of the USTA’s US Open Series…The top-seeded Thiem could have an interesting start against Pospisil, and the No. 2 Nishikori starts against the winner of the Tim Smyczek-Donald Young all-American encounter…Other interesting openers include (9) Isner vs. the Dudi Sela-Jared Donaldson winner, (14) Johnson vs. the Medvedev-Opelka winner, and (4) Dimitrov vs. the hot-handed Edmund…Wildcards were awarded to Dimitrov, Nishikori, Raonic, and Americans Smyczek and Tommy Paul…Withdrawing from the tournament were Dan Evans, Illya Marchenko and Bernard Tomic…Monfils beat Ivo Karlovic in last year’s final…Former champs in the field are Monfils (2016), Nishikori (2015), Raonic (2014), and Del Potro (2013,’09-08).

Women’s Seeds: Simona Halep, Kristina Mladenovic, Lauren Davis, Julia Goerges, Oceane Dodin, Monica Niculescu, Ekaterina Makarova, Christina McHale

Floaters: Jelena Jankovic, Genie Bouchard

Notes: Halep the lone Top 10 seed in the field…Tough starts  for (5) Dodin vs. the former No. 1 Jankovic, and (8) McHale vs. the former Top 10er Bouchard…Wildcards went to Halep, American Sloane Stephens and Canada’s Bianca Andreescu…Pulling out of the event were Daria Kasatkina, Yulia Putintseva, Francesca Schiavone, Yaroslava Shvedova and Samantha Stosur…Stephens returns from an injury following last year’s Olympics and Halep is competing in Washington for the first time…The absent Yanina Wickmayer beat Davis in last year’s final…Stephens (2015) is the lone former champ in the field.

Ahfi Says:

Should have had some more of the top women here in DC.

Margot Says:

AM: HELP! I’ve just done Washington Bracket and I just can’t stop picking wee Sascha….. I obviously need medicine quickly so sending Clarissa over to fetch some asap, so I can change my picks!

AndyMira Says:

M!…How can i help u when i picked Sascha myself!!Urgh!..we’re both need medicine!!Hehehe…But i can’t pick Thiem coz imo he’s excellent only on clay…Delpo just cameback from injury..kei,still not at his top level..Isner?too tired…Raonic?Heh heh…i picked him in my other Brackets…But Sascha maybe disappoint us as well M considering his form not as it used to be…urgh!..

AndyMira Says:

M!…I think we should stop picking the obvious…and start picking the underdog…I mean underdogs winning everywhere atm!…And the fav lost everywhere too!Urgh!!…But..the question is…Who??

Margot Says:

Well then AM, it had better be the most underdog of them all, Qualifier 6…..whoever he may be…..I dare you….:)

AndyMira Says:

M!…What i mean with the underdogs here is that someone other than the fav..like Kohlshreiber,Vesely,DelBonis in Hamburg For example…

Fognini,Haase,Hanfmann in Gstaad….I didn’t mean at all abou the qualifier…how can we want to predict about them…we didn’t even know their name before the tourney start!

Margot Says:

So you don’t take the dare, AM…;)

AndyMira Says:

Oh!…I take the dare alright ma’am!..It’s just in a Brackets like this…if we believe in qualies who’s rank outside Top 100/200 over a player’s inside Top 100..for example in Washington Marcos Baghdatis got Edan Lesham[262]…if i pick Edan over Marcos..it means suicide M!!….And i’m not going to do it even for u whom i love with my whole heart!!!…Woohooo!!!

MMT Says:

My guess is Baghdatis wins one match over Lesham, and Alexander the Great Zverev makes it through to a quarterfinal against Steve Johnson…Dimitrov loses to Kyle Edmund or Hyeon Chung in round 2, BTW – he never does well in DC.

MMT Says:

BTW – the Citi Open is not “left out” of the US Open series, Donald Dell remove it in order to give full broadcast rights to Tennis Channel, rather than kibbles and bits here and there on ESPN.
