Top Seeds Nadal, Federer Advance In Shanghai; Zverev v Del Potro Thurs.
by Staff | October 11th, 2017, 5:27 pm

Top seeds Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer both were winners on Wednesday at the Shanghai Masters. Nadal had no issues whatsoever upping his win streak to 13 in crushing Jared Donaldson 6-2, 6-1.

“It was a very quick match in all aspects,” said Nadal. “I think Jared started playing very well at the beginning, serving big, and then hitting very strong from the baseline. Of course, I started trying to play a little bit more safe, without looking for big shots.

“Of course, I was happy to get that break in the 3-2 in the sixth game. It helped me that he made some double faults, two double faults. Then I played some good points, I think. After that I think I played a great match. Not many mistakes.”

Nadal, who has never won the Shanghai title, could all but lock up the No. 1 ranking this week with a title, which would be his seventh of the season.

“If that happens, it will be, I think, a very important achievement for me,” said Nadal. “I will be year-end No. 1 four times in my career, with so many years of difference I think it’s something very difficult. But there remains work to do.”

Rafa now faces Fabio Fognini tomorrow.

Late in the day, Federer opened play against Diego Schwartzman who’s in the midst of his best season. And the Argentine played Federer tough before losing 6-4, 7-6(4).

“I think I served well. I had good concentration. Had good energy, as well, which I think is always important early on in a tournament,” said Federer who improved to 40-4 on the year after his first tour match in over a month.

“I knew going in it was not going to be easy. He’s had a great run in recent weeks and months. I really felt that he was confident. Shaking off misses, no problem. He was serving well. You could see he was taking the right decisions on his groundstrokes.”

Federer is the lone former champion in the field. He’ll next face the explosive Alexandr Dolgopolov who ousted Feliciano Lopez in three sets.

Alexander Zverev advanced after Aljaz Bedene retired down 4-0 with a right knee issue. Zverev’s win sets up a tasty third round with Juan Martin del Potro.

No. 6 seed Grigor Dimitrov survived three match points down 3-6 in the final set breaker to deny Ryan Harrison 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(6). Dimitrov meets another American in Sam Querrey tomorrow.

“I knew Ryan was going to hit a risk or just play a solid point,” said Dimitrov. “I was ready for either or. I think at 5-6 when he served that first serve, I knew he was going to come to the net. I just didn’t know where he was going to play. I had a pretty decent return. I just had to be ready for anything. He missed it. Six-all was a great point for me. I think I hustled through pretty good. I knew on that match point I just had to make that first serve. That was the only thing that was in my head.”

Two upsets of note, Viktor Troicki edged the reeling Dominic Thiem 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(5). Thiem has now lost four straight matches.

And in between the rain drops, David Goffin win streak of nine was snapped as Gilles Simon took down the Belgian.

Tomorrow, Simon faces countryman Richard Gasquet and also Marin Cilic meets Steve Johnson.

gonzalowski Says:

4-1 already for Rafa, and that Fognini is doing well, but with many failures, a little resigned already. Nadal very well.
Commentators say it is key in the state of Nadal his setback (9 km / h faster than in 2014, as has set the television) and his movements.

gonzalowski Says:

setback no, backhand

Nits Says:

Nadal is at its best his last three matches all stellar performances.

Okiegal Says:

@Nits……Ditto on stellar!! Another good display of vintage Rafa!! Keep it up!!

gonzalowski Says:

Rafa is a victory behind Agassi, in total ATP victories.
Let’s see tomorrow against Dimi, more difficult than today

gonzalowski Says:

moreover, Rafa’s been 3 matches in a row playing indoor, because of the rain, the final of Pekin against Kyrgios inclusive.

t4t Says:

Where’s skeezer?

Daniel Says:

Can’t see Fed losing to Gasquet in a fast HC. We can have a Fed x DelPo rematch semis. If Fed doesn’t win it hope DelPo goes all the way. Winning 1000 pts will place him in #11 (with Wawa and Djoko ahead of him).

Nadal losing 10 games in his last 3 matches. Dimi almost alwasy steal a set, let’s see if he is gonna be able to prolong tomorrow. Good for Nadal os that he is winning fast and saving energy, we thiught he may be tired but playin 1 h and 20 min matches for him is easier than practice.

Potential semis Nadal x Cilci and Fed x DelPo.
We may get a Fedal final here. That would be great.

Where’s skeezer?

Many of his cats are sick. He is tending to them.

gonzalowski Says:

we’ll see if Federer doesn’t tank one of the matches before the final, not to face this Rafa.

Humble Rafa Says:

Nadal is at its best his last three matches all stellar performances.

Thank you. I aim to please when I am fit, healthy and hungry.

Tennis Vagabond Says:

Great to see Del Potro following up the Thiem win at USO with this win over Zverev. It firmly places him between the legit Big Five and the Pretenders to the Thrones.

Wog Boy Says:

“we’ll see if Federer doesn’t tank one of the matches before the final, not to face this Rafa.”

36 year old never tanks…he only “twists” his back, very convenient injury.

Daniel Says:

Yeah TV, Hope DelPo get past Troicki and set Fed semis.

Thiem seems going out of fumes mentally.

Dan Martin Says:

Zverev’s loss/Delpo’s win the big news of the day – interesting event so far

Wog Boy Says:

Delpo played really smart match, he outsmarted Zverev who went ballistic smashing his racquet all the way to chair after he was broken in the third.
Zverev was hitting mostly into Delpo’s BH, but it backfired, Delpo’s BH was working just fine, particularly BHDTL and slicing when needed, altogether very smart, composed and patient playing by Delpo, on the other other hand, there is something with Zverev that turns me off.

J-Kath Says:

Dominic Thiem has always reminded me of wee David, the big hearted terrier Spaniard for whom I have a lot of respect – I have always doubted Thiem will do half as well…he simply hasn’t got sufficient grit and a bit short of the killer determination – nor does he have the talent – alas – where are the successors for the 5-6 current top players in the future?

I do hope we can see Nole and Andy back close to their best plus Stan – not necessarily to deprive Rafa and Roger of success, but to join them.

Zerpantes Says:

For those who say that Federer may tank a match to avoid playing Nadal in the final, may I remind you that Fed has won all their matches this year and the last 4?

t4t Says:

May I remind you that Fed skipped the clay season to avoid getting beaten by Nadal? Also he tamked his match at USO to avoid Nadal?

FedExpress Says:

just stfu t4t
