London Hopefuls Querrey, PCB Fall In Paris; Nadal Can Wrap Up No. 1 Wednesday
The London ATP Finals field became clearer on Tuesday after two of the hopefuls fell. Wimbledon semifinalist Sam Querrey was eliminated from the London hunt after falling in the opening round at the Paris Masters to Serb Filip Krajinovic 6-4, 6-4.
Querrey, who was solidly in position to qualify a month ago, ended the year losing his last three matches and five of his last seven.
Carreno Busta, who made the US Open semifinals, is still alive but hanging on the final berth after falling to Nicolas Mahut 6-4, 6-1.
Elsewhere, Dominic Thiem got a victory over qualifier Peter Gojowczyk 6-4, 6-7(3), 6-4.
Former champ David Ferrer was upset by Adrian Mannarino. Fernando Verdasco took out Andrey Rublev, qualifier Borna Coric beat Jan-Lennard Struff and Pablo Cuevas knocked out Karen Khachanov.
On Wednesday, Rafael Nadal will lock up the year-end No. 1 ranking if he beats youngster Hyeong Chung.
“Let’s see. I need to win a match. But I am here to try my best as in every tournament,” Nadal said. “Of course, if that happens, it will be something important for me. But season is not over and this is not the moment to think much about that. I will just try to think about trying to have the right preparation for the tournament and then try to be ready for the first match.”
Alexander Zverev challenges Robin Haase, Julien Benneteau battles Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Richard Gasquet faces Grigor Dimitrov.
Also, in a tall-small matchup, John Isner meets Diego Schwartzman.
Kevin Anderson, David Goffin and Juan Martin del Potro are also in action and in the London Race. Anderson, del Potro and Tsonga will all qualify by winning the title.
