Djokovic Gets 800th Career Win; Kyrgios Cracks 32 Aces Again At Queen’s
Novak Djokovic became just the 10th player in the Open Era to reach the 800 win plateau after cruising past Adrian Mannarino 7-5, 6-1 in the Queen’s Club quarterfinals.
“There were times when I was thinking and questioning everything when I was injured and going through surgery process, but, you know, everyone has those moments,” Djokovic said.
“Everyone has doubtful moments. So that’s life. Life comes in cycles and teaches you lessons. Whether you’re going to learn them or not, it solely depends on you.
“As I said, I don’t like to put any numbers on how long and when it’s going to end. I would rather say ‘hey, I’m playing great, back again’.
“I’m 31 on the paper, but I’m 19 in the real sense. I just love to keep on going and see where it takes me.”
In the semifinals, Djokovic will take on the hot-handed Jeremy Chardy who got past American Frances Tiafoe 6-4, 6-4.
Djokovic leads Chardy 10-0 but the Frenchman has won 12 of his last 13 matches on grass including a Surbiton Challenger title.
The other semifinal pits Nick Kyrgios against top seed Marin Cilic. For the second straight match, Kyrgios cracked 32 aces in a 7-6(5), 7-6(3) win over defending champion Feliciano Lopez.
“I can’t really remember a specific time where I’ve served at this level back to back,” Kyrgios said. “I didn’t expect to serve the way I did yesterday, but I just found my rhythm early again in this match. But I felt like I had to. He was serving pretty good today.”
Cilic beat former champion Sam Querrey 7-6(3), 6-2. The Croat and Kyrgios have split two prior meetings.
“I just want to keep my grass court form going,” Kyrgios added. “I’m in a good place right now on the grass. I’m serving well. I feel good from the back. I want to just stay focused for this tournament.”
