Wimbledon Seedings: Serena In, Cibulkova Snubbed; Federer, Nadal 1, 2
While the Wimbledon committee once again adhered to their men’s formula for seeding purposes, which takes into account grass results over the last two years, the women’s seedings were so easy. In the past, the tournament has followed the WTA rankings, but this year with mounting pressure for events to provide special seedings for players returning from pregnancy, Serena Williams was awarded the 25th seed.
With the 183rd-ranked Serena included among the 32 seeds, someone had to get bumped, and that was 2-time Wimbledon quarterfinalist Dominika Cibulkova.
“I don’t think it’s the right thing to do,” Cibulkova said to the BBC before the seedings were released. “I think it’s just not fair. I have tried and I should be seeded. If they put her in front of me then I will lose my spot that I am supposed to have.”
Serena, who could face Cibulkova in the first round, is seeded to meet a Top 8 seed in the third round.
Defending champion and 8-time winner Roger Federer returns as the top seed for a 7th time. Rafael Nadal, who did not play a grass tune-up is second, followed by Queen’s champion and 2017 runner-up Marin Cilic.
Both draws will be made 5am ET Friday.
