Just four matches kicked off the men’s draw of the 2021 Madrid Masters. Denis Shapovalov led the way with an impressive 6-1, 6-3 victory over Dusan Lajovic.

“Just definitely felt a lot better today,” Shapovalov said. “I felt very good on the court. Yeah, I mean, I’m just happy to get the first win.”

Shapovalov came in having won just two of his last six matches. And the 37th-ranked Lajovic is a danger on the clay.

“I don’t care if I lose 40 matches. It’s about the next match,” he said. “I’m just happy. Like I said, I’m happy to get the win. But, yeah, now it’s back to work getting ready for the next match which just continues. It’s nothing to dwell on.”

Shapovalov will now face the tricky Alexander Bublik who also won today beating Marton Fucsovics in straight sets.

Alex De Minaur upended Spanish hope Jaume Munar 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 and Tommy Paul knocked out another Spaniard, Pedro Martinez.

On Monday, it’s a full slate of match play with 10 singles matches including young Spanish star Carlos Alcaraz, Grigor Dimitrov, Aslan Karatsev and Pablo Carreno Busta.
