Kontaveit Continues Climb, Bests Vondrousova To Reach Moscow Final; Sakkari Retires
Anett Kontaveit has been the hottest player the second half of the season thus far. The Estonian cruised into yet another final by besting Olympic silver medalist Marketa Vondrousova 6-3, 6-4.
Kontaveit has now won 20 of her last 22 matches as she reaches her fifth final of 2021.
In the final, Kontaveit will challenge Ekaterina Alexandrova who advanced with Maria Sakkari retired down 4-1 due to dizziness.
Sakkari, who upset Simona Halep yesterday, had already clinched a berth in next month’s WTA finals.
Kontaveit leads Alexandrova 1-0 in their head-to-head, beating the Russian in a final set breaker indoors in Ostrava last year.
Kontaveit will seek her 4th title in 11 singles final. Alexandrova, who makes is seven straight Moscow opens with a Russian in the final, is appearing in her third WTA final having won Shenzhen at the start of 2020.
