No. 3 seed Robby Ginepri survived a scare Tuesday at the ATP stop in Bangkok in a first-time meeting with Danai Udomchoke, dropping the first set before storming back to lose only four more games against the Thai in a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 win.

"I didn't know a thing about him, I had to feel my way," Ginepri said.

In other seeded action No. 6 Jarkko Nieminen advanced when Karol Kucera retired down 1-6, 1-3 with a shoulder injury, and No. 7 Paradorn Srichaphan defeated Taipei qualifier Ti Chen in straight sets.

"It went very quickly, but it's always better to win in two sets," said Nieminen after the Kucera retirement. "I didn't notice anything wrong with him during the match, but I wanted to make him work hard."

Other winners were Brit-Scot wildcard Andy Murray who eased past Swiss George Bastl in straight sets, and Luxembourg's Gilles Muller who extended Mark Philippoussis' miserable season with a three-set win.

"I played very solid," Murray said. "I don't think he made many mistakes, but I returned really really well today. I think I got at least two points in every one of his service games. He may not have played his best match, but I played really, really well."

On court Wednesday in Bangkok are (Q) Thomann vs. (3) Ginepri, (4) Haas vs. Labadze, Dlouhy vs. (2) Hewitt, (1) Federer vs. Daniel, Gimelstob vs. N.Lapentti, Calatrava vs. Tursunov, and Minar vs. (8) Horna.
