Top Seed Zvonareva Out at WTA GuangZhou

Top-seeded Russian Vera Zvonareva, returning from an ankle injury, made it a short week Tuesday at the WTA stop in GuangZhou with an opening-round exit against China's Ting Li 6-3, 7-5.

The Chinese had plenty extra to cheer about with the successful start of (2) Shuai Peng (d. Dominikovic) and (5) Jie Zheng (d. Gulllickson from a set down), along with fellow seeds (7) Marta Domachowska (d. Ant. Serra Zanetti from a set down) and (8) Martina Sucha (d. (WC) Y.-Z. Xie 1-and-0).

Un-seeds into the second round Tuesday were China's Tiantian Sun (d. Harkleroad, bagel in the third), American Jamea Jackson (d. Kutuzova), Swiss Emmanuelle Gagliardi (d. (LL) Lisjak in three), Belarus qualifier Victoria Azarenka (d. Voskoboeva, bagel in the second), Russian Alina Jidkova (d. (Q) S.Sun), Spain's Arantxa Parra Santonja (d. (Q) M.Yuan), and Israel's Tzipora Obziler (d. (Q) J.Lee).

Scheduled for Wednesday are S.Uberoi vs. N.Li, Kirilenko vs. Camerin, Bammer vs. Llagostera Vives, Sucha vs. Azarenko, Z.Yan vs. Y.Chen, and Jackson vs. Zheng.
