Two Chinese Into Semis at WTA Guangzhou
Posted on October 1, 2005Chinese women featured in all four quarterfinal matches Friday at the WTA stop in Guangzhou, and two made it through safely to the semifinals with No. 5 seed Jie Zheng upsetting No. 4 Maria Kirilenko 6-3, 6-7(10), 6-1, and Zi Yan defeating countrywoman Na Li 7-6 in the third.
The remainder of the losers were Chinese with 16-year-old Belarus qualifier Victoria Azarenka defeating Shuai Peng when the No. 2 seed retired with heat illness at a set down, and Spain's Nuria Llagostera Vives edged Ting Li 7-6 in the third.
Lining up for the Saturday semis are Yan vs. Azarenka, and Llagostera Vives vs. Zheng.
