Ancic Pounds Gonzo for ATP Auckland SF Berth

Jarkko Nieminen and Mario Ancic moved on to the semifinals of the Heineken Open with straight-set wins on Thursday.

In the first quarterfinal of the day, unseeded Stanislas Wawrinka posted a 6-3, 6-4 win over German Florian Mayer. He will now play fifth-seeded Mario Ancic, who stunned top seed and defending champion 6-0, 6-3.

In-form Finnish Jarkko Nieminen defeated 2004 Olympic Gold medalist Nicolas Massu 6-3, 7-6(4) to reach the final four. The No. 7 seed advanced to the semifnals for the first time in this tournament after two first round losses in his previous two appearances (2002, 2004). (ATP)
