Murray Finds Way to Win Again at ATP MemphisPosted on February 24, 2006 Unseeded Brit-Scot sensation Andy Murray was bent but would not break for the second consecutive time Thursday at the ATP stop in Memphis, winning another three-setter with a 7-6(4), 3-6, 7-5 grinding victory over South African lucky loser Rik De Voest.
"I feel much fitter and stronger now," said Murray, who on Monday will replace Tim Henman as the No. 1 Brit on the ATP Rankings. "There was a lot of questions about my fitness last year...I thought I was the fresher of the two at the end of the match. I feel quite good having come through five matches at San Jose and come here and won in three sets yesterday (against Rainer Schuettler)." No. 6 Tommy Haas (d. Spadea) was the only seeded winner on the day, with No. 8 Xavier Malisse coming up short in a potential meeting with top seed Andy Roddick after a straight-set loss to French qualifier Julien Benneteau. Other winners into the quarterfinals Thursday were Russian Dmitry Tursunov (d. Saulnier in three after a bagel in the first), Belgian Kristof Vliegen (d. Goldstein), Chilean qualifier Paul Capdeville (d. Karlovic in three), and Swede Robin Soderling (d. Carlsen). Winners in doubles quarterfinal action were (1) Bryan/Bryan (d. Belgians Malisse/Vliegen) and (2) Aspelin/Perry (d. Americans (WC) Delic/Reynolds). Friday's match-ups in Memphis are Vliegen vs. (Q) Capdeville, Soderling vs. Murray in a San Jose rematch, Tursunov vs. (6) Haas, (1) Roddick vs. (Q) Benneteau, and in doubles highlights (3) Gimelstob/Huss vs. (WC) Blake/Fish. |
