Hingis Continues Hot Comeback with Davenport WinPosted on March 14, 2006 Martina Hingis eliminated one of the three remaining former Indian Wells champions when she defeated Lindsay Davenport 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 to reach the Pacific Life Open quarterfinals Tuesday. Hingis, herself a desert champion in 1998, defeated second-seeded Davenport, who won the title here in 1997 and 2000. (The other former champion still alive is top seed Justine Henin-Hardenne.) Hingis has now reached the quarterfinals or better in all six appearances in Indian Wells and has failed only once to reach the semifinals (l. Rubin in 1999). The Swiss former World No. 1 improved to 19-6 on the year. She claimed her second win this year against a Top 5 player, having beaten Maria Sharapova en route to the Tokyo final. Russian Dinara Safina upset fifth-seeded compatriot Anastasia Myskina 6-1, 6-3. Fifth seed Elena Dementieva again reached double figures in double faults (11) but defeated China’s Na Li 6-3, 6-2. Third seed Maria Sharapova fought off an early challenge from Israel's Shahar Peer before winning 7-6(2), 6-1.The Russian former World No. 1 has reached the semifinals or better in her three previous appearances in 2006.
