Federer v Nadal VIII at Wimbledon Sunday
Posted on July 8, 2006
Roger Federer will be the favorite against a player he is 0-4 against this year Sunday in the Wimbledon final. The world No. 1 Federer and unlikely grasscourt finalist Rafael Nadal will square off for the Wimbledon title, with the Swiss attempting to regain some of his swagger against the player who has dominated him both on clay and hardcourts in 2006.
Federer had an easy time in his semifinal, brushing past unseeded 34-year-old Swede Jonas Bjorkman 6-2, 6-0, 6-2, while Nadal's journey was a little rockier, but still ending in a straight-set 6-1, 7-5, 6-3 defeat over No. 18 seed Marcos Baghdatis.
"We'll see how long it's going to last," Bjorkman told the BBC before the match, with the Swede lacking the big serve or baseline power to bother the Swiss, and finding it difficult to get in and ply his trade at the net.
Baghdatis had a nervous start, dropping his first service game at love before finding his feet in the second set.
Federer has lost to Nadal in six of their seven career meetings, but this will be their first encounter on grass.
"I know I can beat him," Federer said of Nadal. "I don't need to think of playing against him. I need to focus on me playing on grass, my style, playing aggressive. It's going to be easier on grass to do that than on clay."
Federer has now won a record 47 consecutive matches on grass, and is the first player in the Open Era to reach five consecutive Slam finals, and 16 consecutive tournament finals overall. A win Sunday will put him in league with Bjorn Borg and Pete Sampras as players to win four consecutive Wimbledon titles.
