Davydenko, Robredo Win Openers at Bastad

Posted on July 11, 2006

Top seed Nikolay Davydenko returned to winning ways at the Synsam Swedish Open in Bastad on Monday.

The Russian stopped a run of three first round exits (Queen's Club, s'Hertogenbosch, Wimbledon) with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Spain's Alberto Martin in 70 minutes.

Meanwhile, second-seeded Tommy Robredo began his quest for the title with a 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory over France's Gilles Simon.

Robredo converted just eight of 24 break point opportunities, relying heavily on first serves to get himself out of trouble for victory in two hours and 13 minutes.

The ATP Masters Series Hamburg champion has won 25 matches on the ATP circuit in 2006 to rank No. 9 in the INDESIT ATP Rankings.

Robredo will now meet either Wimbledon semifinalist Jonas Bjorkman or Alexander Waske of Germany.

Joining the three times semifinalist in the second round is former World No. 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero. The No. 8 seed came through a tough opening encounter against Swedish wild card Ervin Eleskovic 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.

Ferrero will now play Austrian Oliver Marach, a 6-3, 6-7(2), 6-2 winner over Swedish wild card Filip Prpic.

Meanwhile Memphis finalist Robin Soderling advanced past Serbian Boris Pashanski 6-2, 6-3 in 59 minutes.
