Coria Misery Continues in CroatiaPosted on July 26, 2006 Defending champion Guillermo Coria exited the Croatia Open at the first hurdle, beaten 6-3, 6-2 by Robin Vik on Tuesday.
Third-seeded Coria won just 16 points on serve and hit 12 double faults in the 70-minute encounter against Vik. The 24-year-old dropped his serve on seven occasions. Last week Coria, ranked No. 27 in the INDESIT ATP Rankings, retired with a right shoulder injury while trailing Novak Djokovic 6-1, 1-0 in their Amersfoort semifinal. Vik improves his season match record to 10-19. The Dubai and Munich quarterfinalist awaits the winner of wild card Juan Martin del Potro and Raemon Sluiter in the second round. Fourth-seeded Djokovic, who went on to beat Nicolas Massu for his maiden ATP title in Amersfoort Sunday, needed just 60 minutes to beat Croatian wild card Luka Belic 6-3, 6-3. Djokovic, up to No. 28 in the INDESIT ATP Rankings improves his 2006 record to 25-11. Despite serving at just 52 per cent, fifth seed Carlos Moya defeated Czech Jiri Novak 6-4, 6-7(6), 7-6(3) to reach the second round. Novak converted just one of 10 break point opportunities. Carlos Berlocq knocked out lucky loser Sergio Galvani, a replacement for top seeded Stuttgart champion David Ferrer. Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo beat Spanish compatriot Fernando Vicente 5-7, 6-0, 6-1 in one hour and 38 minutes for a second round meeting with eighth-seeded Filippo Volandri. -- ATP |
