Wawrinka Tops Cilic for Umag Quarters Berth

Posted on July 27, 2006

Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka is one win away from his third ATP semifinal of the year (Auckland, Barcelona) after defeating Croatian wild card Marin Cilic 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 to reach the quarterfinals of the Studena Croatia Open in Umag. Wawrinka improved to a career-best 19-17 on the season. Last year he returned a 16-16 record after failing to win one match in seven attempts in 2004.

Wawrinka next meets Argentine wild card Juan Martin del Potro, a 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 winner over Czech Robin Vik. Del Potro, who reached the round of 16 in Stuttgart last week, has now claimed four of his five career match wins at ATP level in the past two weeks.

Unseeded Spaniard Albert Portas won 80 per cent of points on his first serve in a 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 win over Czech Jan Hernych to reach his second quarterfinal of the year (Estoril SFs).

Italian Filippo Volandri battled for more than three hours to defeat Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo 4-6, 7-6(4), 7-6(5). The Spaniard claimed one more break (seven to six) and won two more points (116 to 114) but Volandri won the two critical tie-breaks.
