Seeds Nieminen, Massu Outed at ATP KitzbuhelPosted on July 28, 2006 Philipp Kohlschreiber advanced to his sixth quarterfinal of the season with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 victory over third-seeded Nieminen at the Generali Open Wednesday. It was the first time in five career meetings this season that the German had tasted victory over the Finn.
Nieminen managed to win just 15 of 69 points on return of serve, as Kohlschreiber hit six aces and 36 of 42 first serve points. Kohlschreiber recorded best performance this season came in Bastad, two weeks ago, when the German reached the semifinals losing to Richard Gasquet. The 22-year-old has also reached quarterfinals at Adelaide, Las Vegas, Munich and s'Hertogenbosch. The No. 13 seed will next meet seventh-seeded Juan Ignacio Chela, who beat Serbian qualifier Dusan Vemic 6-4, 6-0 in one hour and 15 minutes. Ninth-seeded Agustin Calleri extended his winning streak over sixth-seeded Nicolas Massu to 4-2 in beating last week's Amersfoort finalist 6-2, 7-6(4) and there was further woe for seeded players as No. 16 seed Andrei Pavel lost. Local hope Jurgen Melzer beat the Romanian 7-5, 6-3 in 85 minutes and will next meet eighth-seeded Mikhail Youzhny, a 6-4, 6-1 winner over Edgardo Massa. There was better news for fifth-seeded Fernando Verdasco who knocked out Max Mirnyi 6-4, 7-5. Verdasco will play 2001 champion Nicolas Lapentti in his fourth quarterfinal of the season (SF: Valencia; QF: ATP Masters Series Hamburg, Gstaad). Lapentti improved his record in Kitzbuehel to 23-7, with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Stefan Koubek to add to his quarterfinal performance in Stuttgart last week. -- ATP |
