Moya, Volandri Beat Rain Into Umag Semis
Posted on July 29, 2006Eighth-seeded Filippo Volandri will play Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland in the semifinals of the Studena Croatia Open on Saturday.
Volandri, a runner up in 2003 (l. to Moya) and 2004 (l. to Coria), extended his winning streak over 32-year-old Albert Portas to three matches in beating the Spaniard 7-6(4), 6-4 in one hour and 39 minutes.
Both players won a total of 72 points yet Volandri, this season's Buenos Aires finalist, broke serve four times from nine opportunities.
Wawrinka knocked out 18-year-old Argentine Juan Martin del Potro 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 to advance to his third semifinal of the season (Auckland, Barcelona). By doing so, Wawrinka -- ranked No. 69 in the INDESIT ATP Rankings -- improved his 2006 match record to 20-17.
Four times former champion (1996, 2001, 2002, 2003) Carlos Moya ended Argentine qualifier Juan-Pablo Guzman's run 6-1, 6-4 in 72 minutes. Moya proved particularly dominant on first serve winning 23 of 25 points.
The former World No. 1, winner in Buenos Aires over Volandri in February, will meet either fourth-seeded Novak Djokovic -- last week's Amersfoort champion -- or Jiri Vanek.
The match between Djokovic and Vanek was postponed to Saturday morning due to a storm. The Serbian led Vanek 6-1, 1-2 when the match was suspended.
