Myskina, Li Into Stockholm QuartersPosted on August 10, 2006 STOCKHOLM, Sweden -- Top seeds Anastasia Myskina and Li Na cruised to the quarterfinals of the Nordea Nordic Light Open Wednesday. Both handled their second round matches at this Tier IV event in straight sets.
No.1 seed Myskina beat Polish qualifier Urszula Radwanska, 76(3) 63, to set up a meeting with Martina Sucha. With the victory, Myskina improved her record to 6-1 at the lone summer hardcourt tournament on European soil. Last year, she reached her sixth of eight Sony Ericsson WTA Tour finals here, but had more trouble in the early rounds. The 25-year-old Russian, who won her first match here with an almost identical score, 76(5) 63, survived a pair of three setters last year before her quarterfinal. No.2 seed Li ousted Yulia Beygelzimer, 64 60, to enter her fifth quarterfinal of the year. The Chinese ace will next play Bulgaria's Tsvetana Pironkova, who managed a 64 62 upset over No.5 seed Catalina Castano. Li is playing her first summer hardcourt tournament here. The 24-year-old rewrote tennis history two months ago at Wimbledon, when she became the first Chinese to reach a Grand Slam quarterfinal. A few weeks later, she led China to a 4-1 Fed Cup World Group I Play-off victory over Germany. Sucha won her second round match Wednesday when Emmanuelle Gagliardi retired due to a right shoulder injury. The Slovak also reached the Nordea Nordic Light Open in 2002 when the event was still played in Helsinki, falling to Svetlana Kuznetsova. Last year, Sucha made the quarters and lost to Vera Duchevina. In doubles, top seeds Yan Zi and Zheng Jie gave Klaudia Jans and Alicja Rosolska a double bagel (60 60) to enter the semifinals. Unseeded Stephanie Cohen-Aloro and Selima Sfar also made the semis by defeating Kristina Barrois and Agnieszka Radwanska, 62 46 61. On Thursday, No.3 seed Zheng Jie will return to action against Kaia Kanepi. -- WTA |
