Ljubicic, Davydenko Beaten at ATP BeijingPosted on September 16, 2006 Top-seed Ivan Ljubicic and No. 2 seed Nikolay Davydenko were both bounced out of the China Open in Beijing Friday in quarterfinal play.
Ljubicic was knocked out by Korean Hyung-Taik Lee 6-3, 7-6(3) in one hour and 42 minutes. The 30-year-old Lee earned his second career meeting over the Croat and a spot in his first tour semifinal since 2004 Queen's Club. Lee will now faces fourth-seeded Mario Ancic, a winner over No. 5 seed Dominik Hrbaty 2-6, 7-6(4), 6-4. The 22-year-old Ancic who is returning from back and knee injuries was aided by Hrbaty's eight double faults. US Open semifinalist Davydenko retired 33 minutes into the match with Paradorn Srichaphan trailing 6-2, 1-0 citing dizziness. The retirement handed Srichaphan his first semifinal since Indian Wells. "It is good to be in the semis. I made semis two year ago, and last year I had an early exit, so I am very glad to enter semis at the China Open this year," Srichaphan said. "It is his decision (to retire from the match). Maybe he is too tired or injured. I am really aggressive in the first set, and I think that helps me in the match." Davydenko said the transition from the US Open to Beijing was difficult. "My doctor said before the match that my shoulder is tired because of too many matches," Davydenko said. "My body is completely dead in the match. But it is not all about injury. I lost my concentration from 100% to zero. And the time difference, I woke up at seven o'clock this morning but my body wants to sleep. I came here and tried to win, but it's all bad luck." Up next for The Thai will be No. 3 seed Marcos Baghdatis, who crushed Danai Udomchoke 6-2, 6-1. |
