Argentina Into 1st Davis Cup Final in 25 YearsPosted on September 24, 2006 Agustin Calleri and David Nalbandian put Argentina in its first Davis Cup final in 25 years Saturday, defeating Australia's Wayne Arthurs and Paul Hanley 6-4, 6-4, 7-5 to clinch the tie 3-0.
It was 1981 when last Argentina reached the final, with Guillermo Vilas and Jose-Luis Clerc losing to Americans John McEnroe, Roscoe Tanner and McEnroe/Peter Fleming in doubles. "It's unbelievable," said Argentine captain Albert Mancini. "For a long time we have waited for this. For a long time we have dreamed about this and to be in the final of the Davis Cup, and to be here now and to have the chance of winning it is really amazing. To beat Australia here at home in the semifinals, it's something. We are very emotional people as you can see and that's why I am overwhelmed." Before the doubles the second rained-out singles from Friday was resumed. Jose Acasuso, picking up where he left off leading Lleyton Hewitt 4-0 in the fifth set, recovered from an immediate service break to close out the set and the match 6-1. "They are world class," said the Australian captain John Fitzgerald. "It's disappointing. When you're in a two-horse race and you come in second, it's not your favorite position to be in. But, we have to give credit where credit is due. We played a world class side and in the conditions, which had turned soft and slow because of the weather, they were too good -- we can't say anything else. In the final Argentina will travel to Moscow if Russia wins their semifinal, or will host the U.S. |
