Bryans Keep U.S. Alive v Russia in Davis Cup

Posted on September 24, 2006

After Andy Roddick and James Blake went winless on day one of the Davis Cup semifinals tie versus Russia on Friday, the Bryan brothers kept the U.S. in the mix Saturday with a 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 win over Dmitry Tursunov and Mikhail Youzhny.

While line-ups can be changed, Roddick is scheduled to face Youzhny in the first must-win singles for the U.S. on Sunday. If the former No. 1 prevails, then it will come to a decisive potential meeting between Blake and Marat Safin.

Nikolay Davydenko, the Russian former French Open semifinalist benched on Friday, could be inserted in either match for a Sunday appearance against the Americans.

"Do I need to pay you for that clinic? -- It was such a great performance," McEnroe told Bob and Mike Bryan after the match.

The brothers increased their career Davis Cup record to 9-1.

"We play our best tennis in Davis Cup," Mike said. "We're looking to make a little history. It's going to be tough tomorrow, but I think we have a pretty good shot at winning both matches."

Never in the Open Era (since 1968) has the U.S. won a tie from 0-2 matches down.

With a win the Russians would host Argentina in the final. If the Americans could make history with a win Sunday, they would again play on clay in the final at Argentina.
