Teen Del Potro Shocks Moya at ATP Mumbai Posted on September 27, 2006
Argentine teen Juan Martin del Potro posted the biggest win of his young career Tuesday, upsetting No. 5 seed and two-time Chennai winner Carlos Moya 6-3, 6-2 in Mumbai, India.
The lanky 18-year-old del Potro with a strong baseline game is among the new faces that figure to make big waves on the circuit in the future.
"It's a very big moment for me, Carlos was one of my idols," del Potro said. "You have to seize every chance you get against a player like him, and I was determined not to be the one doing all the running."
The Argentine will now meet Ramon Delgado, who advanced when his opponent, Italian Davide Sanguinetti, retired after 59 minutes with gastroenteritis, trailing Delgado 6-3, 2-1.
Moya wasn't alone in the seeded exit as No. 7 Juan Monaco fell to Stefan Koubek 7-6(5), 6-4.
Eighth-seeded Wesley Moodie needed three sets to edge wildcard Rohan Bopanna 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-4. The big-serving South African will next take on qualifier James Auckland.
Germany's Simon Gruel beat Yen-Hsun Lu 7-6(4), 6-3 and will next meet either No. 3 seed Tomas Berdych or Pole Lukasz Kubot in the second round.
