Only two matches were on the docket for opening day in Moscow. Local favorite Teimuraz Gabashvili stole the headlines as the 21-year-old Moscow resident came through with a 7-6(3), 6-3 win over Gilles Muller.

Gabashvili, a wildcard for the event, served seven aces on the way to a 73-minute victory.

In the only other match, 27-year-old Jan Hernych needed only 61 minutes to upset fifth seed Filippo Volandri. Hernych came through 6-1, 6-4, taking all three break points he had during the match.

US Open semifinalist Nikolay Davydenko is the top seed in a field in which the top three seeds are Russians. Davydenko opens against Jiri Vanek of the Czech Republic.

Second-seeded Dmitry Tursunov, who captured his first career title at Mumbai a week ago, will face qualifier Sergiy Stakhovsky of the Ukraine, and Mikhail Youzhny is the third seed and will open against Germany's Philipp Kohlschreiber.
