Gabashvili Headlines Light Day at ATP Moscow
Posted on October 10, 2006Only two matches were on the docket for opening day in Moscow. Local favorite Teimuraz Gabashvili stole the headlines as the 21-year-old Moscow resident came through with a 7-6(3), 6-3 win over Gilles Muller.
Gabashvili, a wildcard for the event, served seven aces on the way to a 73-minute victory.
In the only other match, 27-year-old Jan Hernych needed only 61 minutes to upset fifth seed Filippo Volandri. Hernych came through 6-1, 6-4, taking all three break points he had during the match.
US Open semifinalist Nikolay Davydenko is the top seed in a field in which the top three seeds are Russians. Davydenko opens against Jiri Vanek of the Czech Republic.
Second-seeded Dmitry Tursunov, who captured his first career title at Mumbai a week ago, will face qualifier Sergiy Stakhovsky of the Ukraine, and Mikhail Youzhny is the third seed and will open against Germany's Philipp Kohlschreiber.
