Koralev Stuns Blake in Las Vegas

Two-time former champion Lleyton Hewitt won his seventh straight over Vince Spadea wafter defeating the American 6-3, 6-3 in round-robin play at the Tennis Channel Open in Las Vegas Tuesday.

The second-seeded Hewitt won the title in 2000 (d. Henman) and 2003 (d. Philippoussis), when the event was played in Scottsdale, Arizona. Hewitt served at just 55 per cent but jumped on Spadea's second serve, winning 10 of 15 points.

Former World No. 1 Marat Safin, who has not won a title since beating Hewitt in the Australian Open final in January 2005, won his first round-robin match, defeating Austrian Stefan Koubek 7-5, 6-2. The third-seeded Russian did not face a break point.

Free-swinging Russian teenager Evgeny Korolev pulled the upset of the day, stunning top seed and defending champion James Blake 6-2, 6-4 in exactly one hour. Korolev, who celebrated his 19th birthday earlier this month, seized the initiative from the outset of the match by breaking Blake in the first game. "That gave me a lot of confidence right away," Korolev said. "Today was pretty cold to play and we both had a difficult time."

Korolev claimed his second win in six meetings against Top 10 players, adding to his victory over Nikolay Davydenko in Marseille last year.

After surviving the Main Draw Elimination, Korolev lost his first round-robin match Monday to Juan Martin del Potro, which means Blake can still advance to the quarterfinals.
