Top-seeded break-out star
Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark, former Top 5-er
Jelena Dokic, and former No. 1
Maria Sharapova, making her 2009 singles debut following injury, mark an eventful tournament this week at the
Warsaw Open in Poland.
The draw has not been kind to Sharapova, who will open against the able
Tathiana Garbin of Italy before a potential second-round meeting against the top-seeded Wozniacki.
Sharapova is making her singles debut on the year after a difficult rehab from shoulder surgery late last year.
Other seeded players are
Agnieszka Radwanska,
Jie Zheng,
Aleksandra Wozniak,
Sara Errani,
Daniela Hantuchova,
Bethanie Mattek-Sands and
Alona Bondarenko.
It seems like eons ago, but it was only last year when world No. 1 Justine Henin claimed the Warsaw title, handling with ease the unseeded Alona Bondarenko 6-1, 6-3.
