It’s a slow day at the office, so I’ve been cruising around the message boards, and reading the comments, and naturally the big debates rages on with Federer vs. Sampras in the greatest of all-time match-up, or the GOAT as they say. I stated my case for a few weeks back, and if you don’t want to read it I basically said that Roger still has some work to do. But he’ll get there and become the GOAT.

Without a loss after five events in this his debut season on the senior tour, Marcelo Rios has already sewn up the No. 1 senior ranking for 2006, making good on a promise earlier in the year to add the top senior mark to the No. 1 ranking he also reached while on the ATP […]

Howdy, X-Fans!
I just got back today from a truly glorious 3-day weekend at a trailer park in beautiful sunny Appalachia. There’s nothing like a crisp October day when the mountains are ablaze with foliage, the sky is blue and cloudless, and the air is so still that it takes a falling maple leaf a half-an-hour […]

At its best, the women’s game can lay claim to a field of 8 players, each of whom are entirely capable of winning the Year-end Championships: Amelie Mauresmo, Justine Henin-Hardenne, Kim Clijsters, Maria Sharapova, Svetlana Kuznetsova, newly un-retired Martina Hingis, Nadia Petrova, and Elena Dementieva.
One would think that this kind of variation would lend itself […]

A few quick hits:
Sharapova to Steal No. 1?
Amelie Mauresmo is No. 1 on the WTA Tour Rankings. Justine Henin-Hardenne has had a better year that Mauresmo, and is currently No. 1 in the 2006-points-only standings. Who will come out on top at the end of the year? Maria Sharapova?
Henin announced on her website she is […]

In each of the last two years, WTA Tour CEO Larry Scott has described the rash of injuries as a “fluke.” Time to make it three, or at least comment on the women’s state of the game, maybe hold a Women’s State of the Union address.

On Thursday, world No. 1 Amelie Mauresmo pulled out of […]

I’m going to blame Tennis-X Editor Luke Johnson for this.
He said, “I have a great idea — let’s you do a blog [who talks like that?] where unlike the other blogs, it will be totally unedited. You post stuff, the readers will post stuff, anything goes. Then you can respond to the readers.”
Great idea. Like […]

Dmitry Tursunov likes to work hard, because being able to work hard means he’s not injured.
The Russian, who has lived in America since the age of 12, has had a curious rise up the rankings this year paralleling American James Blake — two sporadic players with plenty of weapons who could never get over the […]

Where world No. 1 Roger Federer and muscle-bound No. 2 Rafael Nadal go, so goes tennis fandom, including “fringe” tennis fans.
The 2007 Davis Cup was drawn last week, including the exciting first-round match-up such of Switzerland vs. Spain.
Federer and Nadal’s response?
“Eh.”
The rest of international sports’ response to Davis Cup?
“Eh.”

My colleague Mr. Vach sure got into hot water forecasting that Roger Federer would not match Pete’s six straight years at No. 1. And judging by the comments, the Federphiles were not amused. Having roamed around the internet a bit, it’s crystal clear when talking about the greatest tennis player one has to tread very cautiously as to not incite the many Federer faithful.
