Rafael Nadal and Richard Gasquet will meet in the US Open semifinals on Saturday extending a rivalry that began way back in juniors.

In this match of two 27-year-olds, Nadal has owned Gasquet 10 zip. But Gasquet does at least have one win in juniors.

“I saw on YouTube that video sometimes,” Gasquet said. “People are talking about this video, you know, when I played against him, against Rafa. YouTube and I can see I’m winning against him, so I don’t believe it sometimes.

“I didn’t know him when I played him when I was 13 years old,” Gasquet continued. “He was already fighting a lot already, already running so much, and I remember I won maybe 6-4 in a set, and I told my father after, He’s a big fighter. I didn’t lie; I was true. In the future, this one is biggest player in the world in the history. So for sure I won that time at 13 years old, but since this match I didn’t.

“It was a match in Tarbes, one of the biggest tournaments for the younger children under 14. You know, it’s good to win under 14, but is better to win on the pro, and I didn’t. But life is long, huh? We are only 27 years old. Even me. So why not? We will see.”

And here’s that Youtube video Gasquet speaks of, it’s already been seen over 700K times!

Said Nadal of facing the Frenchman, “He’s a nice guy, very nice person, one of the players on the tour that I feel closer because we are from the same age. We always had a good feeling. So it’s great, no? When you see a player like Richard that we grow up in, you know, similar ways and we played when we were kids. Today we have the chance to be in the semifinals of the US Open, so is great. Is a great thing for both of us, so very happy.”

The match took place in Tarbes, France at the “Petits As”, a premier 12-14 junior event in Europe. Gasquet won the title in 1999. Nadal then took it 2000 when both Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic were also in the draw and met with the Scot winning.

Ben Pronin Says:

This is seriously some monster tennis these two were playing. I like how Gasquet is 10x more aggressive at 13 than he is now. And look at Nadal looking to come in on every point. Nuts.

M Says:

Rafa was so funny – he not only remembered the tournament in which Richard beat him, but the score and the set. :-)

Michael Says:

Gasquet did it at 13, can he do it at 28 ? I am not at all hopeful about his chances of beating Rafa in this kind of form. Ofcourse, surprises do happen. But in this case, if that happens, it would be an earth quake. It will be almost like Soderling beating Rafa at Roland Garros in 2009.
