Serena Collects Three WTA Awards; Clijsters, Oudin Also Winners
The WTA Awards were announced yesterday in Miami. No surprise as 2009 No. 1 player Serena Williams collected three awards wining Player of the Year honors and with sister Venus, Doubles Team of the Year and Fan Favorite Doubles Team. ADHEREL
“It’s cool,” said Serena who won the award last year. “Hopefully I can do it again.”
US Open winner Kim Clijsters took home Comeback Player of the Year honors and she also won her seventh Sportsmanship award which is based on player voting not on media and fan voting.
Said Clijsters, “Obviously coming back is special but coming here and receive the trophy that get’s voted by the players is something that to me really means a lot.”
Newcomer of the Year went to fresh American face Melanie Oudin. Yanina Wickmayer won Most Improved Player.
Leizel Huber won the Player Services award while Elena Dementieva won Fans Favorite Singles Player award.
