Let’s get this out of the way right now: Serena Williams is going to win the French Open.
ADHEREL
Now, on with the preview show.

The younger Williams sister is the top seed, and opens against Anna Tatishvili. Her stiffest opposition will come…I don’t know, never? Maybe Maria Sharapova or Victoria Azarenka in the final, two players she rolls on red clay. Yawn.

Also in Serena’s top quarter are No. 26 Sorana Cirstea vs. Kiki Bertens in an upset alert, No. 10 Caroline Wozniacki vs. Laura Robson in an upset alert, No. 22 Eraterina Makarova vs. former French champ Svetlana Kuznetsova in an upset alert, and No. 8 Angie Kerber in an interesting match-up against unpredictable German Mona Barthel.

The second quarter also has a number of interesting meetings in No. 5 seed and former runner-up Sara Errani vs. former world junior No. 1 Arantxa Rus, No. 4 Aggie Radwanska vs. veteran Shahar Peer, No. 30 Venus Williams vs. now-upset-specialist Urszula “Not That” Radwanska, No. 11 Nadia Petrova vs. fast-rising Puerto Rican Monica Puig (winner to possibly face Madison Keys), and No. 20 Carla Suarez Navarro vs. Simona “The Reducer” Halep.

The third quarter? Also lots o’ upset alerts.

Watch for former champ No. 6 Li Na against Anabel “Funky Cold” Medina Garrigues. She likes to do the wild thing. Also No. 23 Klara Zakopalova vs. Kaia Kanepi, No. 21 Kirsten Flipkens in a guaranteed upset at the hands of Italian Flavia Pennetta (winner to likely face Italian and former champ Francesca Schiavone), and No. 3 Victoria Azarenka vs. Russina veteran Elena Vesnina.

The bottom quarter? More upsets!

Watch for No. 7 Petra Kvitova vs. Aravane Rezai (if that doesn’t get her, next up is the Shuai Peng/Camila Giorgi winner), No. 18 Jelena Jankovic vs. Daniela Hantuchova, and No. 9-seeded tighten-upper Sam Stosur vs. the ageless grinder Kimiko Date-Krumm.

It’s Serena’s title — it’s just a matter of who emerges from the giant red cloud of upsets over the next fortnight.

Kimmi Says:

true serena coming in with great momentum but its all not a given, that is why they have to play the matches.

wozniacki will lose first round again. I can see Laura beating her. It will be sixth first round loss in a row.

Bnzau Says:

We’ll know if serena will win if she gets through her first three matches(and by what margin).Never underestimate any player at grand slam.underdogs come in with renewed motivation and top seeds/favorites are prone to choking under pressure.I think Aga and Maria have the toughest quarters.I see Maria and Serena making the semis…Vika and Aga,not so much…

Thangs Says:

WTA is a joke…Serena is just doing cherry picking…Not her fault…but, Henin, Kim are missed so much..

jatin Says:

@thangs
Serena should play in men’s tennis.
But i don’t think she would even qualify for the main draw/.Women’s tennis is a joke where players earn money due to their beauty.

Henin was the only player in last decade who was talented and great. She was my fav ,along with kim

tennis x hippy chic Says:

Serena is just unplayable ATM,so i just cannot see anyone getting the better of her here at the FO,clay isnt supposed to be considered her best surface, well you could have fooled me especially going by her form lately,i just cannot see Maria retaining her title,i think everyone else is playing for runner up spot,Stosur is a good CC player usually, but even her form has been up and down,i think only Vika at her very best has a chance against Serena ATM IMO.

tennis x hippy chic Says:

Jatin i agree i think the womens game is sadly lacking a player like Justine or Kim,a really meaty challenge for Serena, and a great rivalry for the fans to get their teeth into,Vika and Maria look great against anybody else, but average against Serena.

Margot Says:

Hey tennisx hippy chic, can’t see you in the bracket. Where r uuuuuuooooo???

tennis x hippy chic Says:

Hi Margot ive changed my monikor, ill give you a clue like you im a Brit, and our Andy is my 2nd favorite after Rafa,i go by Lalaland in the bracket challenge,i filled it out yesterday, like you i didnt see a save button though?

tennis x hippy chic Says:

Margot Tennis X Hippy Chic AKA Alison lol :),i fancied a new monikor, plus the name fits me perfectly,as to what i am like in the real world.

Margot Says:

@tennishippychicky
I know, but you’re not there under ANY of those. Strange.

Giles Says:

alison. Sorry, you can call yourself whatever you want but if you don’t mind I shall address you as “alison” just to cut down on the typing. :-)

Brando Says:

Very, very, very off topic but I thinks it’s interesting bit of news: Your’s truly fav for Wimby…… Muzza….. Already training on grass : http://tinyurl.com/pstywqj . Do not blame Andy at all, he’s just doing the smart thing. Ever going to win FO? Realistically, no. Wimby though? Yes, and it’s good that he’s preparing for it already- early bird catches the worm a they say. If he wins Queens then for me he is the fav ahead of the others.

Brando Says:

Re Serena: very, very true. Put simply: she’s the most dominant, best player in comparison to the field post Steffi Graff IMO. More dominant than Sampras, Fed or Rafa. She’s just comfortably the best and like she so humbly put it herself: her biggest opponent is the one she sees in the mirror when she looks at it. Serena can only beat herself really as when she plays her best tennis she is just way better than the rest. And this is clay- wait till grass and HC where the gulf of class is even more shocking! Too good!

Kimberly Says:

The global tennis site is very nice. I don’t have the link with me I am at the tennis courts to release some anger about the heats loss but I want all my peeps to play .

Kimmi Says:

Kimberly/margot or anyone..could you send the link. Do we have a group?

Cena Says:

Brando’s most recent comment about Serena is spot on. Of course, it all depends on which Serena shows up to play as was witnessed last year. If anyone should manage “to win” against her, it will be only because she did them the kind service of beating herself. She is the best without a doubt!! So keep yourself in check this year, Serena, and don’t beat yourself. I would love to see Serena and Rafa victories!!

Margot Says:

kimmi for some reason I can’t post it. Grr. Go onto
“French Open Draw” ans kimberly has posted it there.
About 2/3 way down.
We do indeed have a group.

tennis x hippy chic Says:

Margot it is strange yeah,i did fill out the bracket on tennis global network,so i dont get it either.

tennis x hippy chic Says:

Margot finally filled out the bracket and posted a message too.

M Says:

“true serena coming in with great momentum but its all not a given, that is why they have to play the matches.”

What Kimmi said.

I mean, for starters, there *is* somebody else who has already won that tournament in her quarter. (And yes, okay, Sveta is not the Most Consistent Player ever either, but still …)

And I’m sure no one has forgotten what happened last year. (Yikes.)

If ReRe stays in good health and focused, she will have great chances.

Kimmi Says:

Thanks kimberly and margot. aaaargh!! i register but can’t seem to figure out how to pick. It should be simple but why it doesn’t work for me????

Kimmi Says:

ok, i was suppose to sign to the group. Its seem to be ok now. :)

tennis x hippy chic Says:

Brando thanks for the info on Andy,as much as i love clay and the FO,im looking forward to grass and Wimbledon,i agree in that if Andy wins Queens,he will go there as one of the favorites for the title, cannot wait to see Andy back playing on the grass,Britain has had a lousy summer upto now,so go get that title Andy, make us Brits proud.

grisham Says:

Robson routined again.

grisham Says:

Brando, what happened to his back/hip injury? Cured?

contador Says:

Kimmi, I was having technical difficulty with that bracket website when using internet explorer – trouble making check marks in the boxes. So I switched browsers to Safari and picking worked fine.

Colin Says:

Alison (I too find that quicker to type) – are you the westcountrylalala who contributes to the British Not606 site? If so, what part of the West Country?
I’m originally from Hereford, which is West Midlands rather than West Country. After living in London since 1958, I have never lost my accent, I’m glad to say. Arrr!

tennis x hippy chic Says:

Colin not me im afraid,im from North Yorkshire originally, although i havent live there since 1998,my significant other and i moved to Coventry in the West Midlands, before moving to Hunstanton in Norfolk by the seaside in 2004,although i havent lost my accent either which you can cut with a knife lol.
