Novak Djokovic opened his Monte Carlo title defense with a blistering 6-1, 6-0 rout over Albert Montanes. The World No. 2 needed just 45 minutes to take down the Spanish veteran.

“For the first match on clay, it was great,” said Djokovic. “I lost only one game, so there were not too many flaws in my game that I could recall. On the other side, I’ve had an opponent who is a specialist on this surface, but he hasn’t played even close to his highest level. He was making a lot of unforced errors.

“I was just trying to use the court well, not allow him to get into a rhythm. I was changing the angles. I was coming to the net, being aggressive. Just very good first match.”

Next for Novak is the Gael Monfils-Pablo Carreno Busta winner on Thursday. Monfils ousted Kevin Anderson while the young Spaniard, playing as a “lucky loser”, toppled Ivan Dodig.

Also in second round play, David Ferrer had no problems with Jeremy Chardy beating the Frenchman 6-3, 6-0. Tomas Berdych also eased past Dmitry Tursunov 7-5, 6-4 and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga posted one of his better wins of this season beating Philipp Kohlschreiber in three sets 6-4, 1-6, 6-4.

“I was tired so it was a bit complicated for me,” said Tsonga. “Fortunately I had an early break in the first set and I was able to hold my serve. But I knew it was going to be tough. Then I had this letdown in the second set. I was able to hang in there in the third set, and he ended up letting it go. It’s maybe because I practised too much or I didn’t manage the amount of effort I made.”

Grigor Dimitrov, Andreas Seppi and Marin Cilic were also first round winners.

Tomorrow, eight time champion Rafael Nadal returns as does Roger Federer who is seeking his first Monte Carlo title.

Stanislas Wawrinka also makes his clay debut against Cilic in what could be the best match of the day.

Hippy Chic Says:

Now that is a very nice picture about Joe Willy Tsonga, shame hes not smiling,he has a gorgeous smile too, great win today also BTW….

Hippy Chic Says:

Meant nice picture of not about, anyway also have to say he looks so handsome and brooding without the smile, very sexy, forgot to say congrats to all the winners, and commies to the losers too, poor Albert Montanes, probably didnt know what had hit him lol….

Hippy Chic Says:

BTW Did i here rightly that Lendel is now coaching Berdych, can anyone confirm or deny this story please??

Rishi Says:

Can someone please tell me how to create an account in this blog?

Rishi Says:

Looks like Stan’s the man….for practice, that is.

Michael Says:

Albert Montanes is a Clay court specialist and so this belting by Novak should give him considerable encourgement going forward.

Hippy Chic Says:

Michael the matches will no doubt get alot harder than this though??

Michael Says:

Alison, Ofcourse. Nothing comes easy in life. It all happens after a struggle. However, there is also a prospect of meeting tougher opponents in earlier rounds and relatively weaker opponents going further into the tournament. Nonetheless, Players live for the day and it is so far, so good.

Giles Says:

Montanes played 4 matches in 4 days prior to meeting a fresh joker so don’t put too much emphasis on “belting by joker”

mat4 Says:

I didn’t watch the match but found some highlights this morning.

The problem is Novak’s FH. When I rewatch his matches from 2007 and 2008, you can see how much power he had both with his serve and his FH.

First, he served 130 mph with ease, then, and his second serve was second to none. Then, it seems that he could generate much more pace with his shots than he can do now.

On the other hand, it seems that he has more control today, but on clay, power is very, very important. In key moments, last year in MC, he just couldn’t hit through Rafa without going va banque.

skeezer Says:

Fed just beat tricky Step 1 and 2. Not a bad start!

Josh Says:

Good stuff from Rog. Happy to see him get through easily!

metan Says:

Rafa is in action. Nice for first set.

Okiegal Says:

@Chic

Where on earth did you hear the little tidbit of gossip that Ivan is going to coach Berdy?? Interesting gossip, for sure!!

Okiegal Says:

Rafa serving for the match…….He did it, even after an iffy start.

Giles Says:

“tricky Step” 35 year old. Lol Lol

princessice Says:

Rafa even lost his 1st serve due to time violation…

Nirmal Kumar Says:

We all saw what Step did to Rafa in IW as well as to Roger in Dubai. He is a tough opponent, and few people have claimed he is playing his best tennis now. So a nice start for Roger.

Okiegal Says:

Marin is starting off just like Rafa……he’s gonna have to kick it up a notch, or this is gonna be over before you can turn around! Stan, 3-0.

atsiladan Says:

Rafa blaming ball kids for his time
violation. What a shame. Next time
cut on your pre serve retual instead

skeezer Says:

“Rafa even lost his 1st serve due to time violation…”
Yes! Make that guy obey the rules!

Giles Says:

“Make that guy obey the rules”. Well, they can try!
#KingsDontObeyRules

Hippy Chic Says:

Okiegal yesterday when Berdych was playing i heard Barry Cowan say i wonder if Lendel could do for Berdych what he did for Andy, and find that little bit extra in his game,or something along those lines, couldve swore anyway??

Hippy Chic Says:

Sean Randall/Ben Pronin err can you confirm or deny please??

Ben Pronin Says:

Lendl coaching Berdych? Haven’t heard anything. I read that Berdych is open to getting a big name coach which is maybe what those comments were based on.

Giles Says:

It will not be ethical for Lendl to coach any player in the foreseeable future. He more or less left Andy in the lurch to pursue his own personal interests.

skeezer Says:

““Make that guy obey the rules”. Well, they can try!
#KingsDontObeyRules”

Well, they did. He got a violation that cost him. Lol! And blaming the ball kids?
#howrude

Josh Says:

Rafa and Wawrinka round up what has been an exceptionally dominant start from the Top 4 in Round 2. Dropped only 11 games combined! (Djokovic 1, Wawrinka 2, Federer 3, Nadal 5)

Margot Says:

Why would Lendl do that? It’s just idle commentators filling space with idle gossip….I hope!

Giles Says:

12.50 pm post. Ahh, so you do watch Rafa’s matches.

Salleh Ahmed Says:

roger said that he could miss french open due the birth of the child

sensible decision. family comes first.

Hippy Chic Says:

Andy Murray and Martina Navratilova and a host of tennis stars are doing a fund raising event for Elena Baltacha in the summer, called a rally for Bally on 15th June, including Anne Keothavong,Tim Henman,Jamie Murray and Greg Rusedski in mixed doubles matches at Queens Club,Birmingham and Eastbourne….

Hippy Chic Says:

Well Roger has nothing left to prove in terms of his tennis, priorities change and sometimes you have to put your family 1st,im sure he will know what to do for the best??

Giles Says:

Does fed play FO or hold Mirka’s hand? It’s hardly a choice as some are implying.

Okiegal Says:

It will not be the last time Rafa loses a point for a time violation. He has a major problem with that….he better go to plan “B”……oops he did, he blamed the “B”all kids. I guess they thought if Rafa can fiddle fart around, so can we!! Tee Hee

#obeyspeedlimit

VAMOS RAFA!!

John Says:

^hahaha, funny post.

courbon Says:

Novak has tomorrow real challenge with Pablo Careno Busta. I watched this guy couple of times and he is very good.Actually, I think he is maybe a future star.Novak has to watch it…( I think I read somewhere that Busta had last year best winning precentage on Challenger tour, if I’m not mistaken ).
Also, Tsonga and Fognini should be a good match-_I think Fognini wins.

Hippy Chic Says:

Courbon hi i was hoping for a Nole V Gael match tomorrow, but i agree that kid played really well, but Nole looked awesome yesterday, there wont be much many players could do against him if he continues that way, still early days though i suppose….

Hippy Chic Says:

I am so looking forward to Tsonga/Fognini,i love both players so may the best man win….

courbon Says:

@ Hippy Chic: Well, you never know-upsets are always possible.Novak does know his game really so who knows.
Tsong-Fognini should be a fun match.
I have to say Wawrinka was very good today…He better get ready for Rafa in the semi.

contador Says:

Pablo Carrena Busta is indeed on a hot streak. Young guy, great tennis player. But I got all excited about Albert Ramos and Pablo Andujar several years ago and they are good but not exactly setting the ATP on fire.

I think Pablo Carrena is only 22 ??? Don’t remember. Anyway yeah, Nole will be ready, pretty sure. Ya never know…

contador Says:

Aw, so excited for Mirka, Roger, Feddy family. All the best to them. Is she really having another set of twins?

Hippy Chic Says:

Twins twice wow what are the chances, that family is very fertile,it would be so strange to see Roger missing a GS,still it only speculation ATM,nothing confirmed at this early stage?

Okiegal Says:

It just seemed like yesterday we found out she was expecting. Hey, there will be lots of players that would love to see Mirka deliver around FO time……lol. Its never been said that they are having twins, right?? If they are expecting twins, maybe she is taking fertility drugs. There were 4 sets in the maternal side of my family. That’s a lot of little rug rats to feed, me thinks! LOL Good luck to the Feddy family. I hope he has a boy! I have one son and he has always been such a delight!!

Hippy Chic Says:

Twins run in my family,i was told by a fortune teller i would have twins, even though i never had children, and my father in law was a twin, and its supposed to skip a generation,so if Roger gets Fed up with Mirka hmm,im also trying to imagine him knocking on doors on Halloween night shouting trick or treat,or singing carols at christmas like away in a manger door to door, with four kids in tow….

Hippy Chic Says:

Okiegal i think Rafa needs to get procreating and get Xisca up the duff around September time?

Okiegal Says:

@Chic

I’m not sure what “up the duff” means, but it sounds very intriguing!! LOL

contador Says:

hahahaaa, at first read, I was puzzeled too, Okiegal. HC got me on that one.

Here is my Idahoan translation: Rafa needs to knock Xisca up after he wins the US Open. :D

Can’t quite imagine Rafa being a daddy yet. Kinda would be a shocker, actually, imo.

Definitely can see Nole as daddy during his career; Andy too.

contador Says:

puzzled not puzzeled….

Okiegal Says:

@Contador

I think Uncle Toni will tell his nephew when he can get hitched and and start a family, after all, he is his coach!! LOL I have been told by coaches that athletes and new brides are not a good mix for performance in the athletic arena. I don’t know if that is true or not……ummm….???

Hippy Chic Says:

Okiegal/Contador in America you say knocked up,and Blighty(thats GB) we say up the duff, either way it is a slang term for pregnant, anyway i believe Rafa has said he does want to get married and have kids, but at the moment hes focused on his career,i believe he Novak and Andy will all make great dads when the time comes,Roger looks like a great dad too,im still trying to imagine him saying to one of the kids go to your room your grounded though….

Okiegal Says:

@Chic

Thanks for the explanation….I figured that was you meant. You Brits have a cute way of saying things….Love your lingo!!
