Maria Kirilenko Breaks Off Engagement To Hockey Star Alex Ovechkin

Another high profile sports romance is over. Former Top 10 Maria Kirilenko has announced that her engagement to NHL star Alex Ovechkin is over.

“I have decided to terminate the engagement,” the 27-year-old Kirilenko said. “There are many reasons, but I do not want to go into details. I’ll say one thing: our relationship completed, but I respect Sasha as a person and athlete and I sincerely wish him continued athletic success.

“At this moment, I’m concentrating on getting prepared for the nearest tournament. And I’m hoping that soon I’ll make my fans happy with news not only about my personal life, but also about my sports achievement.”

The two got engaged in at the end of 2012.

The news is the second engagement called off in recent months involving a high profile women’s player following the Caroline Wozniacki-Rory McIlroy split.

A left knee injury has limited Kirilenko’s play this year. The No. 98th-ranked Kirilenko has just two match wins most recently beating Sloane Stephens at Wimbledon.

UPDATE: Reports from Russia indicate that Kirilenko wasn’t pleased with Ovechkin recently appearing in an Instagram picture with another girl, Russian gymnast Karolina Sevastyanova who had been rumored to be with the hockey star.
