Maria Sharapova Confirms Split From Sasha Vujacic, Is She Single Again?
The engagement, the wedding, the romance is over. Maria Sharapova confirmed her break-up with basketball star Sasha Vujacic today at the US Open.
“That’s correct,” Sharapova confirmed when asked if it was true. “It’s been since the end of spring actually. I was waiting for someone to actually ask me that question, but nobody did directly.
“I have never really been the person to announce things,” Sharapova added. “I never announced when we were together or never announced that we were engaged. I never have in any of my previous relationships, as well. It’s not really the type of person that I am or the way I like to go about things. I’m not an announcer. I don’t go and do interviews about it or photo ops.”
Sharapova and Vujacic, a former star for the LA Lakers, first began dating in the fall of 2009. The two then got engaged last fall. The Slovenian was conspicuously absent from her entourage during Wimbledon and the Olympics.
Sharapova won her third round match today easily besting Stanford’s Mallory Burdette 61, 61. The former champion has lost just seven games in three matches. She’ll next play countrywoman Nadia Petrova Sunday afternoon in the fourth round. If there is a new love maybe he’ll appear in her player box for her next match.
Sharapova won the US Open in 2006.
