Serena Williams back-doored her way into WTA Finals semifinal round on Friday while Maria Sharapova was eliminated from contention in Singapore.

Sharapova was out after she failed to defeat Aggie Radwanska on Friday in round robin play in straight sets, while Caroline Wozniacki’s straight-set win over Petra Kvitova secured Radwanska into the semis.

Wozniacki, now into the Saturday semifinals where she will meet her friend Serena, would not have even qualified for the year-end champion had not Li Na withdrew from the tournament after announcing her retirement.

“I believe in myself and I believe in my skills,” Wozniacki said after posting a perfect 3-0 record in round robin play. “I’ve been playing well, so I believed I could beat anyone. I obviously also knew that if I wasn’t playing up to my best I could lose to all of them.”

While off on Friday, Serena was looking at an exit from the tournament if Ana Ivanovic beat Simona Halep in straight sets on Friday. After winning the first set in a tiebreak, Ivanovic’s hopes were dashed when she lost the second set, putting Serena into the semifinals.

Halep in the other Saturday semifinal will take on Radwanska.

“Wozniacki…would not have even qualified for the year-end champion had not Li Na withdrew from the tournament”.
Eh, no – Caro finished in front of Na in the race. She MIGHT not have done so, had Na played in Wuhan and/or Beijing, but to say that she WOULD not is plain wrong.

contador Says:

Really enjoyed watching Halep beat Serena. Radwanska taking down Kvitova was a fun match too.

In the end, tough to see past Serena as the winner.

RZ Says:

@contador – agreed. Of those in the semis, I think Woz has the best chance of knocking Serena out. I can’t see Halep beating her again.

Perfect fan Says:

What a crack-down by woz’ there….
leading 4-1 in the deciding set TB, on her serve….and then God knows what struck her, done n dusted!! Serena was no where near her best, ultimate opp. lost….weird-weird-weird.

On another note….something great happened to Woz’s confidence post that ugly breakup with Rory….for the good maybe. She’s playing rly gooooooood. She’s looking hotter too ;)

Hippy Chick Says:

Perfect Fan i agree that was such a shame,Woz colapsed like that, when it looked like she was finally about to get a W over her friend,i cant see past Serena now….

Margot Says:

Just seen Halep out-Radwanska Radwanska! What a lovely player she is. Hope she’s “in the zone” tomorrow. Go Simona!
