Sharapova was out after she failed to defeat Aggie Radwanska on Friday in round robin play in straight sets, while Caroline Wozniacki’s straight-set win over Petra Kvitova secured Radwanska into the semis.
Wozniacki, now into the Saturday semifinals where she will meet her friend Serena, would not have even qualified for the year-end champion had not Li Na withdrew from the tournament after announcing her retirement.
“I believe in myself and I believe in my skills,” Wozniacki said after posting a perfect 3-0 record in round robin play. “I’ve been playing well, so I believed I could beat anyone. I obviously also knew that if I wasn’t playing up to my best I could lose to all of them.”
While off on Friday, Serena was looking at an exit from the tournament if Ana Ivanovic beat Simona Halep in straight sets on Friday. After winning the first set in a tiebreak, Ivanovic’s hopes were dashed when she lost the second set, putting Serena into the semifinals.
Halep in the other Saturday semifinal will take on Radwanska.
