Following a tough 5-set loss to Milos Raonic, Stan Wawrinka revealed he’s been feeling sick the last 10 days.

“I’ve been sick since 10 days now,” Wawrinka said after the 3-hour, 45-minute loss. “Still trying to get into the second week. Couldn’t really be at my top. When you play a top guy like Milos, it’s difficult. You need to be 100% to have a chance to beat him.

“Today he push from the beginning. He was there. That’s it. He was better.”

Wawrinka hadn’t lost a match all season or even a set until the Canadian took the Wawrinka for the first time after losing all four prior meetings.

“I think Milos start really well,” Wawrinka said. “He was pushing, playing well. Wasn’t really feeling great there, not playing my best. Wasn’t moving to do something else. I’m surprised to still have went five sets.

“For me, I tried to fight like always, tried to find solution. I think he went a little bit down with his speed, with his movement. I took the opportunity to push him to the fifth set. But for sure I’m disappointed. I know I tried what I could today.”

Wawrinka won the 2014 Australian Open.

calmdownplease Says:

Well, you’re going to be ‘sick’ for quite a while longer now, I’m afraid
A bit tacky too, very Fed like with the excuses.
lol

MMT Says:

More nonsense – if you’re fit enough to step on the court, you’re fit enough to lose like a man…no excuses.

Margot Says:

yeah, he should’ve kept quiet, it diminishes Raonic’s win.

Angel Says:

Calmdownplease, the one who always gives excuses after losing is Nadal. Except the last time he played Novak because he has lost to him so many times lately and lost so badly that he had no choice to admit that Nole is way better than him.

MMT Says:

And Margot, just imagine if you’re one of the poor “idiots” who LOST to a “sick” Wawrinka?

Wog Boy Says:

That’s what happens when you are 31 and enter into in relationship with 19 years old woman that follows you on tour, you are bound to be tired and worn out ..

andrew Says:

Ha ha Wog Boy is hilarious I do not think Stan is a nice guy. He left his wife and daughter for a teenage girl.

skeezer Says:

He must have started getting sick when the draw came out and saw he had to possibly play Raonic.

Django Says:

As Fed used to say, if your sick, don’t play.

jane Says:

did stan use it as an excuse? i mean that sincerely; i haven’t read his presser but i do know it was already well known because apparently he couldnt talk well in his early pressers due to his throat or whatever.

i didnt know this but i guess milos played and beat stan at the abu dhabi exo this yar.

NK Says:

“I do not think Stan is a nice guy. He left his wife and daughter for a teenage girl.”

I won’t comment on Stan’s personal life. No one is perfect. I have heard he is one of the nicest guys on the tour…very humble.

RZ Says:

We all know the real reason Stan lost: that outfit. Now if he was wearing the plaid shorts, he’d have had the AO title in the bag.

calmdownplease Says:

He looked like a walking bag of candies.
So ridiculous
Thank goodness for all of our eyesights, at least, that he has been shown the door!
Berdych was not doubt resentful of his thunder being stolen too.

RZ Says:

@cdp – Berdych is no longer with H&M so he is no longer automatically in the running for worst outfit.

calmdownplease Says:

I must admit, the thought of actually watching Berdych play in the earlier rounds never seems to play too much upon my mind ;0)

MMT Says:

“Django Says: As Fed used to say, if your sick, don’t play.”

Exactly!

Ben Pronin Says:

When did Federer say that? He’s always playing when he’s sick. He did so just 2 weeks ago.

Django Says:

Years ago when Nole had an ailment and said he was sick. Guess it’s ok for Stan and himself though.

MMT Says:

Django & Ben: The exact quote was, “I’m almost in favor of saying, you know what, if you’re not fit enough, just get out of here.”

It was after Djokovic retired from his quarterfinal with Andy Roddick in 2009 at the Oz Open.

http://tennis-column.blogspot.com/2012/10/the-relationship-between-federer-and.html

Ben Pronin Says:

Almost being the keyword there, I guess.

Federer has always talked about how he’s played through injuries. He had back problems during his first Wimbledon run and said he got lucky that it went away as his matches went on. And I think he also had some back issues during his 2012 Wimbledon run.

Gypsy Gal Says:

To talk about injuries after a win or a defeat is still in bad taste either way, when you lose it takes away from an opponents win,if you win and say i was injured or not at my best, its like saying ha ha i still beat you even though i was injured….

Ben Pronin Says:

GG, that I agree with. Had Wawrinka won last night, we probably wouldn’t know he was “sick for the last 10 days”.

I think the reality of the situation is players reveal injuries after losses on purpose. They want to undermine their opponent’s win and they want them to know they beat a less than 100% player and that if next time they’re 100% the result will be flipped.

Markus Says:

This brings to mind one great athlete, Steffi Graf. She had a litany of illnesses throughout her carrer but I don’t remember her talking about them at all. Not once has she ever used illness as an excuse for anything. Very admirable champion.

MMT Says:

“Markus Says: This brings to mind one great athlete, Steffi Graf. She had a litany of illnesses throughout her carrer but I don’t remember her talking about them at all. Not once has she ever used illness as an excuse for anything. Very admirable champion.”

Here, here!

Gypsy Gal Says:

I do remember another all time great in Martina Navratilova pulling Steffi up at Wimbledon one year for talking about a back ,but i dont know if she made a habit of doing it though?….

skeezer Says:

I guess this would be a bad time to bring up Rafa…….

Gypsy Gal Says:

Rafas notorious for it,and i say this even as a fan, there i hold my hands up lol….

J-Kath Says:

Sorri – going against the grain here….I think Stan is second only to Andy Murray when he says it as it is.

Okiegal Says:

I just love it when someone brings up Rafa!! Great subject matter…… :)

lapinroyal Says:

I’m not gonna make friend… but Novak fell short of one GS for career GS… of retirement… (LOL sorry WB, I know you’re almost up!)

lapinroyal Says:

Did Simon spread some non-Gluten free products one the court the other day?

J-Kath Says:

MMT

I see you answered something I must have said, but with so many threads around I can’t find it.

MMT Says:

J-Kath, you felt I had embellished the story with Murray and del Potro…I assure you I did not – but anyway, it was a long time ago.

In fact, I missed RZ’s point contradicting Kyrgios’ contention that the Aussie audience loves Berdych, so it was all a bit of a tangent.

Wog Boy Says:

lapinroyal,

Almost but not wuite up, and the first thing I saw when I opened my eyes few seconds ago is your comment, not really nice way to start the day ..;)

I think that Simon planted non gluten free food in Nole’s locker..you know when he was picking up those gossips from locker room about how everybody wants him to brat Nole :)

Talking about that match, I wonder what did Simon plant in Roger’s locker in their’s two GS matches when he dragged Roger in two five set matches…what do you reckon my friend?:)

Now I have to get up, make coffee, let the cat out of garage and do some nice roast lamb, it is Australia day today and I always do roast lamb on Australia day..

lapinroyal Says:

@WB
Who need coffee when you have friend like me! LOL
Regarding Roger-Simon, I tend to forget bad memories… ^_^ But if you insist, surely some mono thing or maybe a twin babies.

Wog Boy Says:

lapinroyal,

I am glad I have you as a friend, you will never let me down, another good one from you:)

lapinroyal Says:

@WB
“I am glad I have you as a friend, you will never let me down…”
Are trying to recruiting me as Novak fan now? Only if Nole let Roger with this AO… and SW19

;-)

J-Kath Says:

MMT – Assure away….your right…mine to challenge the purity….nonetheless appreciate your passion.
Ciao
K

Wog Boy Says:

lapinroyal,

“Patience is a virtue”

I do have great hopes and believe that common sense and cool head will prevail, that you will realize your mistakes (we all do them when we are young) and that you will join us in cheering the best of the bests, No1e, meanwhile Nole will probably give that one to you, after all it is only SF and not final, but first Nishikori…and Berdych, mind you :)

lapinroyal Says:

@WB
“…and Berdych, mind you…”
Touchee… Ouch! That Nigri… Nishikori is not gonna get eating raw (I’m hungry now!!! Have fun with you BBQ and Happy Aussie day! If the old man is still around next year and not too busy with his twins, I may drop by down under to say hi to him and to y’all!)

Wog Boy Says:

lapinroyal,

Thanks and looking forward to it…and don’t worry, the old man will be playing even if and when the time comes that they have wheel him in and out of RLA..:)

BBB Says:

Didn’t Roger complain about his back after Berdych beat him at Wimbledon? I used to like Federer, but after that comment, and the nasty comment about Djokovic’s ripped return at the US Open, I started to find him petulant.

Django Says:

MMT
Yes, that’s the quote. Excellent piece BTW. There is a similar report on Federer and Murray.

Django Says:

MMT
You need an update from 2011- to present. 😃

Django Says:

BBB
If you’re not fit, get outta here. :-))

Margot Says:

@Django
Always best to separate the player’s personality from the way he or she plays the beautiful game. That way you can appreciate him/her when you see them play.
Otherwise you spend far too much time unnecessarily frothing and foaming, which aint nice to see…;)
Very rarely I dislike both.

Problem is CDP, Fed plays through his sickness and doesn’t go on about it until someone in the press room asks him.

What a guy eh?

Fed is the last person to come up with excuses.

You are the one who comes up with more excuses, than anyone here.

Wog boy, why do you always bring personal relationships into a tennis site?

No one knows what goes on in a marriage. Yet you are so ready to talk about so called tawdry details and belittle wawrinka.

Nasty rumour is what it is.

Should someone stay in a marriage if they are unhappy?

I think Stan did his very best, and we have all heard about the bug circulating on tour. Roger had it, Stan had it, he got a cold, she got a cold…but they played the match.

They fought it out and Stan lost. He will pick himself up and go on to better days.

madmax Says:

He credited Raonic as he should and did not belittle his win in any way.

It was a brilliant win for Raonic and tantamount to Stan’s will to win and mind over matter, over his ailments, but alas, was not good enough.

All credit to Stan for playing and thrashing it out.

MMT Says:

“BBB Says: Didn’t Roger complain about his back after Berdych beat him at Wimbledon? I used to like Federer, but after that comment, and the nasty comment about Djokovic’s ripped return at the US Open, I started to find him petulant.”

He did complain about injuries after he lost to Berdych (http://www.asapsports.com/show_interview.php?id=64595) to his back and leg. Berdych rightfully called him out on it too:

Q. Players gave recently the fair play sportsmanship award to Rafael Nadal. What is your opinion about it? Were you one of those that voted for him or not?

TOMAS BERDYCH: Probably I was voting for no, actually I was voting for Rafa because I was just, you know, trying to just decide I think between two names, him and Roger.
Yeah, I mean, I just decide to go for Rafa. I think he really deserves it, you know. Just was a little bit disappointing after what I read in London, you know, when I play against Roger and beat him. He was a little bit complaining about how he was injured and stuff like that. It was just kind of surprise for me. So maybe that was just the reason I vote for Rafa.
So I think he deserves it. Why not?

Federer was lambasted by the written press after that, and although it didn’t get a lot of play on TV, Nadal won the sportsmanship award that year. Coincidence?

Not for Berdych.

MMT Says:

Django thanks for the link!

That was brilliant. There’s a lot of bitterness in those quotes, some mischief, maybe one or two are innocuous. #4 is an editing error on the video – they spliced two answers together to make one hell of a dig though.

Boy, after all that, I just can’t believe Murray didn’t lay into him in 2013 when Federer cursed at him for stopping in the middle of the point. That kid is pretty smart – I guess he figured he’d catch hell (even if he was right) by responding or even detailing what Federer said.

Django Says:

MMT, you’re welcome. I thought he only disliked Nole.
Good advice margot
Okie and j kath I hope you both are staying strong.

Okiegal Says:

@Django….Oh, how sweet of you to remember us. For me. little over three months ago and you had thoughts to tell me to stay strong! Appreciate that very much. Hope you are enjoying the Aussie Open!!

Markus Says:

Okiegal, I have been away for a while so I’m not sure. When you said three months ago, were you referring to your husband?
